How do mods prove who's a sockpuppet or not? I often worry about getting accused of having more than 1 account. I mean, what if there's another poster who posts in the same sort of style as you and has the same opinions as you, etc? How can you prove that it is genuinely a different person or not?

I think one of the things the mods do is look to see if they are using the same IP address. That doesn't automatically mean sockpuppet thou cuz multiple people in a household can have accounts & there are also members who can use multiple IP addresses but it's just one of the potential signs.

I'm on one board where having multiple accounts is explicitly permitted. Many people have more than one.

Part of it is because they ban people all the time. If you get banned, you just open a new account and continue from there.

One thing that some people do is they open accounts in the names of topical subjects. For example, there is a "Global Warming". Whenever there is a thread on Global Warming, someone logs on using his "Global Warming" name and joins in the discussion. There are a bunch of those.
