My mother is an emtophobe. When I was sick with a stomach virus as a child, my father always took care of me. My parents had a deal, that my father would handle anything having to do with vomit and my mother would handle anything to do with snot! I'm with my dad -- vomit doesn't bother me, but snot makes me want to vomit!

I know this thread is 2 years old, but this is the nearest thread I could find about what I wanted to post. If I started a new thread about this, I would get people posting things like, ''there is another thread the same as this - you ought to search the site a bit before you start new topics'', and it's really annoying. (Can't win on this site! )

Anyway - yes, I hate sickness. Now they've mentioned there's The Winter Vomiting Bug is going around the country, it has f*****g scared the s**t out of me, since there is no avoiding it. Why don't they make a vaccination against tummy bugs, when you pass a certain age (when you become immune)? I become immune by age 10, and I haven't got one since - so now I am s**t scared of getting one. Last time I got one was over 10 years ago, and I was a child then - but now if I got one I'll have to clear it all up myself, and I've never cleared up sick before. No way am I getting a sick bug! I HATE them!

I wish I had a job what had March to November shifts, and not winter shifts (there are jobs out there what don't service in wintertime). Then I can stay at bay, and if any of my family bring it home then I've got places to go to and stay for a week until my family are finished their their germs.

My fear of being sick is so severe that I am not getting a job with small children, because they pick up bugs a lot, and could be sick without warning. At least most adults or teenagers know when they feel sick, and they often know when they are coming down with something - but children haven't developed that part of their conscience until they get to about 8 to 10 years of age. I remember when I was 6 I had the flu, but I was running around hyper and didn't seem to take much notice of the symptoms, but my mum and my older brother had the same flu and they didn't come away from his bed the whole week.

i actually have more of a fear of other people being sick around me??? a guest speaker threw up while she was teaching she had the flu and went to the bathroom in our classroom and i had one of the worst meltdowns of my LIFE. i was shaking violently and crying and had to sit out of the room until she left, and my mom told me that i needed to get over it. im super phobic though like obsessive worries run through my head every day about seeing someone get sick. i have gotten over the fact of myself getting sick kind of?? not a whole ton but somewhat. i also have toleave conversations about the flu and ask if a movie will have a vomiting scene in it. my family thinks im making some sort of spectacle of smth :(

I guess I'm scared of it. I don't like the feeling of it, it's just so horrible. But I'm more scared of being ill and unable to go anywhere which means missing out on learning things that I can't afford to miss out on at my age.

It's not as bad as it was when I was younger, but it's the primary reason I would choose death over chemotherapy if I ever get cancer, and it's the reason I avoid people sick with the flu, planes, boats, carnival rides, alcohol and pregnancy. Although the last two throwing up isn't the only reasons I avoid them. And the advice I've read is quite stupid "Don't be embarrassed, everyone does it sometimes, and it can be more dangerous not to throw up because your stomach needs to get rid of toxins and blah blah blah". They don't realize it's worse than embarrassing, it's traumatizing.

Everyone knows at least one kid who threw up in front of the whole class. A lot of us are that kid. But no one seems to think how a kid can get traumatized from such an experience, even if the kids didn't tease them afterwards or they knew when they couldn't ignore it any longer and did it in the trash can next to teacher's desk instead of on the floor or anywhere else in class.

It go much worse as I became a teenager. If I knew someone in my class had thrown up from stomach flu, even if it wasn't in class, I did not want to go near them even after they were better. I know that sounds cruel, but I couldn't help it. I started having anxiety attacks in class and started missing a lot of school. It wasn't until I read the word "emetophobia" in one of my mothers magazines that I knew there was such a phobia and while I was relieved to know there was a name for my fear, it didn't make things much better. I used to wonder how I could go on with this phobia every day of my life, and that I might not even want to live because of it. I used to I'm amazed I can just type about it now without my hands getting shaky and my heart not racing.

Actually, there's a reason why it doesn't bother me as much as it once did, but I am never telling anyone why. EVER. Don't even think of asking me. Please. :(

That reminds me. One time, my siblings got ill, and I tried to avoid getting it from them. I was supposed to go out to see a play with some people from school, as arranged by a teacher, like a trip but in the evening instead of during the day. Anyway, it was only a few minutes into the first act and my body couldn't take it - I tried getting up to find the toilets but as I did, it just came out. No one from school ever teased me about it, though, even though I got teased about other things. Maybe they understood that it was an illness and I couldn't help it.

When I was little I had to puke from bread cubes toasted in butter with cream soup. It was one of the worst feelings ever.
I hate the feeling of having to puke, and I hate seeing other people puke because it might make me puke.
And the smell of puke is utterly disgusting.

I HATE the sensation of vomiting and will go to great lengths to avoid actually vomiting, even maintaining a large stockpile of Ondansetron so I can treat any nausea I encounter. However, I don't attempt to avoid the vomiting bug like seems to be typical with emetophobia.

Emetophobia makes me a heartless jerk. I have to pretend to feel bad for someone who is puking when I really want to be a million miles away from them for at least two weeks. I just want to run away with my fingers in my ears and jump into a bathtub full of lye. Why can't other people understand? No, instead you hear insults and you're told to just get over it, as if that ever works. And I'm the one who's a jerk?

Why are kids always barfing so much? Their bodies are so small, and yet it's like they hold enough of it to fill a bathtub, and it frequently happens without any warning. We must really be an abomination of nature. One time I was in a store when I smelled something foul, and I wondered what it was. Then I see a toddler who just puked all over the floor with her mother. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. And whenever I went back to the door it still smelled like barf to me for months afterwards. Sometimes I wonder how many kids have puked in a store when I wasn't there. What if it happens in the store when I have to buy my weekly supply of groceries? Is the item I just picked up in the store previously touched by someone with norovirus? Am I out of Purelle already? What about the magazines in the waiting room at the hospital? What about the chair I'm sitting in? They don't scour the germs off everything.

But what can I do, live in a bubble? I find it so hard to believe that there are people with this phobia who have kids and spouses.
