Why do people say cheese when getting their picture taken?

At first, I figured that saying cheese kind of draws your mouth into a smile, so I started chanting the word, but it didn't really feel like I was smiling.

I have a hard time showing my teeth while smiling. It never looks natural.

I don't like taking pictures or "camera-whoring" because I can never make a smile that looks and feels natural. The closest I can get is a shy smirk or a really really small smile.
