If all those rules were obeyed, this forum would be a painfully boring place to visit. I don't know of many people here that haven't broken those rules on a reasonably regular basis with no ill effect.

If images aren't allowed in signatures, then why has nobody complained about the rabbit images I have had in my signature for the past 9 months or so? Again I know of multiple other members that have images in their signatures. Maybe they mean downloaded images, but emoticons are technically images, and "rules is rules".

I guess they're referring to overly large, distracting images that take a long time to load. Also, there are adoptable sites that require clicks on picture links for the pets to "gain levels", like Dragon Cave. These picture links are often posted on forum signatures, begging for clicks.

True but the rules say NO IMAGES. Means exactly that. Maybe they should re-write the rules to clarify what they really mean. If it's that easy for rules to be misunderstood, then people should expect them to not be followed properly.

Yeah, you're correct - but "rules is rules" works better when spoken, and it's probably something of a UK-ism...

Albirea is correct: it refers to avatar-like gifs and other large and potentially flashy, distracting images and really, what you're referring to is a subclass of image - an emoticon - which is not specifically banned.
Also, if you check back to your earlier posts you'll see that some of them are way more signature than content, and the site is supposed to be about posted content and not the signatures.

On other sites, where there are effectively no rules for signatures, I have seen close to a whole screen being taken up with a dancing mess of animation, colours and fonts - for just the signature alone. That's all this rule is trying to avoid happening.
Besides, a signature is just that: a small space where you "sign" your message, traditionally with a quip or link to an interesting site etc.

Nah, not really - but the site has rules and I'm supposed to be helping uphold them, so...

Aren't some of everyone's posts, as long as they have a signature, more signature than content? I take it you mean things like games threads where you simply add a 1 digit number, or when simply replying with 1 word. I am no different to anyone else on this site when it comes to that matter, so please don't try to make me out to be some sort of spammer or troll, because that's how your comment comes across, as well as coming across as patronising. I try to make every post I create have meaningful content, even if there isn't much quantity sometimes, I try to give it quality.

DON'T try to single me out and make an example of me. There are many other people here that break the rules and cause offence to others without as much as a tut from the moderators, so you should quite nit-picking and deal with the real problematic users. It seems to me that some of the mods here just try to tackle the easier to deal with "crimes" instead of what actually matters.

Joe, it actually hurts me that you've ignored the other points I raised.
It further hurts me that you're attempting to argue after I'd posted something I thought was quite clearly a jokey comment from one friend to another - one of whom was desperately trying to think of a subtle way of pointing out a particularly flagrant rule break to someone he considers a friend.

You are not being singled out. I know of at least three similar requests made over the past month - and those were for signatures of only 7 or 8 lines in length.

therefore they are some of the few images that are stored on the WP servers and can be inserted via text. but if you are concerned about it, then by all means take the emoticons out.

Cornflake was doing you a favour to try to remind you to change your signature via banter instead of sending an official PM, which is often not very well-received when sent by a friend. i remind people often about the lengths of their signatures, but sending a PM makes it seem more official than should be necessary between friends.

Personally I'd rather be sent a PM so it isn't on display for all to see.

If I see an image of a face, my common sense dictates that it is indeed an image, whether it was created by a text code or not, it still ends up as an image. And the rules say "no images". I am not concerned about pictures of rabbits in my signature, if I was I'd have changed them months ago. I just used this as an example of how the rules need to be properly thought out without contradictions so people will take them seriously.

This is getting way too petty for me to bicker about now. I've changed the damn signature, so how about we all just get over ourselves, stop being pedantic and end this snobbery now.

Seriously, it's like every time someone opens up with an opinion here, they get someone breathing down their neck about it and treating them like a naughty little kid.

you can't expect that you could argue the application of the rules without having people argue back.

If anyone has an opinion that isn't shared by a mod, the mod will make sure they win. It's sad that some people have to feel the need for power and control over others. This doesn't go for all mods, but it's becoming a trend.

All I did was point out a contradiction, no need to argue.

Alex needs to review his rules, some are easily used against people by mods (for example someone says something they don't agree with, so the mod call pull whatever rule out of their arse.) And moderators are supposed to intervene when things become an actual problem, like for example someone is bullied by someone on PMs or something like that.

In other words: "Let's gang up".
