Again, depends on the person. Perhaps I've been exposed to more evil people than you, but there are plenty of people I know and have known in the past who I could easily dispatch with a bullet between the eyes and little effect on my conscience.

The people I'm thinking of specifically? If they had a chance to kill me, and they knew they would get away with it? Yes.

I'm not really interested in a philiosophical debate about whether I should or shouldn't do something, because I really have no answer for that. I'm just saying that if I had to choose between shooting one of the people I'm describing and a random dog or cat, I could make my choice without a need to think about it, and I wouldn't lose any sleep knowing they're gone. If the choice was between a random dog or cat and a person who isn't a complete scumbag, perhaps I would choose differently.

General: Dogs
More Specific: Terriers
Even More Specific: Airedale Terriers

Technically, my first pet was an Airedale Terrier named Russell. He was mischievous (took my brothers pizza off the kitchen counter once), hyperactive, but for the most part loyal (except for a few nights he snuck out of the his chain and leave the entire night). One of my obsessive interests over my childhood years was dogs, and I couldn't get enough of him. He died in a freak accident however. He ran off the wrong side of the porch attempting to chase some animal (our family suspected it was a rattlesnake, our next door neighbor killed one the next day) and hung himself. I cried when we had to bury him. He was only 31 months old

Whenever I get the opportunity again, I will own another Airedale, and raise it correctly. After watching the Dog Whisperer, I think my dog was oblivious to everyone except my parents, looking back on it.

Species is, like sex, not a legitimate basis on which to differentiate among like beings if one has any sort of ethical philosophy involving reduction of suffering and maximization of happiness as counted among all beings to be affected by a decision. Frankly I'd save one dog over ten people, so disproportionate is our species' inherent identity as destructive, often sadistically-so.

I don't really think the sentience of animals is comparable to humans, though. They may feel pain and happiness, but they don't feel love like we do. They don't ever feel silly, or goofy. There's no distinguishing for them between perplexed, confused, and baffled. I don't think they can hate getting a shot because the idea of a vein being penetrated freaks them out. They hate it because it's pain. And pain means bad.
