It takes far less blast overpressure to bend the metal and it is simply too much stress on the locking pins. If those get warped in any way, you may very well find yourself entombed. In regards to the windows, unless they are very small and are made with thick lead-glass recessed in an asymmetrically-angled frame (look at the "Gucklöcher" (peepholes) in the Cold-War era DDR bunkers), the radiation will still affect the inhabitants and of course the area will be a weak point in regards to blast resistance.
I really busted up laughing when they blew a freaking hole through the side of the building using the binary compound (wasn't it like only 4 to 8 lbs?) and declared the "bunker" (read contaminated death-pit) safe. How's that safe when nerve agents and even critters can infiltrate the structure?! Let's not forget that for each foot of height of the bunker, there should also be a foot of overburden (usually a combination of sand, soil, gravel, concrete, etc. or just soil) when constructing thin-walled shelters. Walls in excess of 3 feet thick and composed of well-reinforced concrete do not always have to follow this rule (topography permitting), though it certainly won't hurt things to do so. Also, what about protection from seismic activity (especially that caused by large explosions)? They never expressed any concern for this obvious threat. In true bunkers, there would be flexible couplings on pipework to prevent broken pipes, sand and gravel filled in the area the bunker will be built prior to laying foundation, and/or the use of "crib" (Tragwerk) construction (in essence, a building within a building attached at various moving points) and large springs or other means of effectively attenuating movement. This is an area in which I have several years' experience and to see garage mechanics and Orange County Choppers-type people trying to convince people they are now magically engineers in special construction (which requires highly-specialized training and schooling) is just appalling.
Fair point. I wasn't thinking about it in relation to a nuclear blast though. I was thinking the biggest issue I would have to deal with was small arms fire and whatever someone could carry with them. I was thinking more in the area of a dual use type of structure with the primary use being as my primary residence. As such, I wanted windows to let in some natural light. However, I want the home to be built under ground for energy efficiency as the plan would be to live 100% off the grid and the reduction in the need for heating and cooling would reduce the overall size and cost of the solar/wind/micro-hydro system I would need to build in order to run things in the house. Heating would actually be accomplished with an old European technology which I have hear referred to as an "oven stove". It's basically a big wood burning oven made of concrete. It takes very little wood to fire it and the concrete then radiates heat throughout the day. As for the hill, doing so would provide for good drainage as rain would not be as likely to pool inside and instead would mostly run off the hill.
You do make good points though. Perhaps if I were to build this theoretical home then the best approach would be to build a bunker as a basement to it. I would just have to figure out a good ventilation system that did not require outside air or required a minimum of it. Bunkers are something of a curiosity for me but not an area of real expertise, so I am not exactly sure how to go about this in my theoretical doomsday survival palace.
Andair (formerly known as Luwa) makes some of the best VAs out there. Each unit is specifically and clearly designated for providing ventilation in a shelter of a specific size and can be both electrically and manually operated. I have yet to see an American company provide a unit that can even compare to what the Swiss have. If you want an air handling/air recycling system, having large (I mean gargatuan) carbon filters have been effective in the bunkers constructed during the Cold War and permit the air to be recycled among around 1000 persons for approximately 30 days. There will still be a point at which you need to derive air from the outside, but with proper equipment, contamination should not be an issue and can possibly be ran "off-the-grid." In the way of the heating, make sure you have some means of cooling the air. Nothing like hot smoke in the cold winter to betray one's position. Large concrete cooling towers can be constructed within an above-ground house to look like a chimney that belongs to a fireplace.
