I was thinking about Karate recently, and thought I'd share a story or two.
The reason I stopped was because I couldn't handle the stress of the gradings. Plus I kept hurting myself while pushing myself to the limits. I hurt my tailbone one time, on a gym mat, which are as hard as the floor, and it still flares up sometimes to this day.
Plus on one of my last gradings, I had to do a breathing, slow moving kata [pattern of moves] while the senseis [teachers] wacked at me with shinai [bamboo sticks]. One of the blows was to my stomach, and I could barely breathe. So, yeah... They didn't go easy on me for being small, skinny, and kind of fragile in a wiry sort of way, that's for sure.
Oh, oh, I have a story about the first tournament I participated in. I only entered in I think two in total, and in the second I won the trophy, but that's not important now.
So, I was only a yellow or tan belt at the time, so a newbie, more or less, and that was back in the day when grappling was a part of the class [it's banned now in tournaments, at least here]. I refused to give up, even while wrastling big boys twice my size, while all the parents except my mum were yelling things like 'take him down!' and stuff like that, not realizing I was a girl. So when I won my first gold medal for trying so hard, right in front of everyone, it felt awesome.
Wow you were a tough child! Now you use that persistence and resilience in your commitment to writing!
