Probably Napoleon. He seems to have had a logical, centralizing basis to his domestic political agenda, and I approve of that in an era when it seems practically de rigeur to be seen to be promoting decentralization, devolution, 'localism' and other assorted nonsense.

Whom do you rate more highly - Attlee or Churchill?

Attlee.

Have you ever been to the Ritz?

No, but I've walked past it. Glad to see you chose Attlee btw, one of the underrated PMs of the 20th century, not that the competition's that hot.

Peter Sellers or Peter Cook?

I had a nice Cuban in the smoking lounge at the Ritz earlier today.

Attlee is about the only twentieth century Prime Minister I like. Churchill is massively overrated (Jeremy Paxman and Peter Hitchens have both published astute deconstructions of the Churchill phenomenon).

I don't really know enough about either of the Peters to say.

Ronnie Barker or Ronnie Corbett?

Barker, I liked his wordplay skills in particular. I couldn't stand Corbett's armchair routine.

(LOL, did you ever see the footage of Churchill being booed when making a speech at Walthamstow Stadium during the 1945 election campaign? I've just spent 20 minutes trying to find it, to no avail, on YouTube. It's well worth a look, if you can ever locate it.)

Do you think we'll end up with a 'No Deal' on 31 Oct?

Never seen it, though I've heard about it. He never forgave the British public for rejecting him - and so resoundingly - in 1945.

I don't think we will; I think "Brexit" will be pushed back again or cancelled altogether.

Do you prefer the Victoria and Albert or the Natural History Museum?

Churchill was a great wartime leader for the UK.

He kept them afloat during the Blitz.

I've only visited either once, and wasn't over-impressed. V & A just meh. NH Museum, couldn't get over just how naff and underwhelming the 'lifelike' Tyrannosaurus Rex was, after hearing all the hype. Still, all this was 15-20 years ago, maybe improvements have been made, but I doubt it.

Notting Hill Gate or Charing Cross Road?

I love Charing Cross station, not least for its close proximity to the National Gallery.

Have you ever visited the Wallace Collection in Marylebone?

Yes, lots of Majolica, if I remember correctly! :D

Have you visited the John Soane House?

Nope.

Have you ever been in Westminster Cathedral (RC)?

Yep

Have you ever visited the Saint Etheldreda's church in Holborn? Key location if you're into the history of English Catholicism.

I've not been inside.

When was the last time you went into Harrods?

2005 - the only time, in fact. I remember that a beef sandwich cost £11.25 in the cafe.

Have you ever been inside the Houses of Parliament?

Lol, I spent a fortune on Cuban cigars in there today, and seven pounds on a cup of coffee. I was rather offended by the quality of service in the café - the waiters were wearing trainers and they were playing that horrible, thudding, mating-dance type music that I'm told is "popular". Not classy at all.

I've actually not been in the Houses of Parliament, though I go past fairly frequently. They're covered in scaffolding at the moment.

Have you ever been in Fortnum and Mason on Piccadilly?

No, they might not even let me in these days...

Do artists still sell their work outside Green Park at weekends? You probably would know better than me, as I haven't lived there for over 12 years, and you've clearly spent a lot of time there more recently. Are you a native or a resident of the city, btw?

Don't write yourself off. You should see the way the staff in there dress, now. It's considerably less upmarket than Harrods.

I was briefly in Green Park today and I didn't see that sort of thing, though I don't pay attention to those sorts of people anyway.

I spend a good deal of time in London.

Have you ever been in Hatchards, the old bookstore next door to Fortnum and Mason? I find it disappointing.
