Pwned is pronounced powned. It was also a misspelling of pawned. It originated long before WoW however, in the counterstrike days. The counterstrike origin was a misspelling of owned, however it was in the DotA game that pawned (because you pawned your opponents heads for gold after you killed them) was also morphed into pwned with the same double meaning of pawning and owning your foe.

it is instructive to me to read the posts that describe where the word "pwned" comes from.

i see many people use that word, and i am sure i could look it up in the "urban dictionary", but i can not be bothered (because it is not a crucial thing i need to know) and i prefer to wonder about it's meaning.

i imagined "pwned" was possibly an abbreviation of the word "pawned" which could either imply being reduced to the status of a pawn in a game of "social chess", or it could imply that one was "sold off" for a cheap price (like at a pawn brokers).

but i also imagined that the "p" at the start of "pwned" looks like an "o" with a line "wall" on it's left side which has a deep foundation.
maybe that may indicate some artistic expression of hedged authority with repect to the source word "owned".

i did not really care what it means, and i was only curious to a partially substantial degree, and now i have found out from reading this thread, what the real meaning is anyway i need not think about it further..

i now understand that there was no wit behind the genesis of the word "pwned".
it was just a typo by some very popular person, but it has none the less spread like wildfire through the vocabulary of many people. i see it so often on youtube replies to videos i watch.

I hate all forms of jargon common the academia, the law, and medicine which have crept into common usage. Words like psychologize, catastrophizing, and many others. I like most words with latin roots as I have always been interested in the history of words, but I am not too fond of Anglo-Saxon monosyllabic words which are commonly taught as simple english in schools today. What I especially had is when in conversation I or another, and especially people on TV use the wrong word or a word that they've made up on the fly, and I hat it when people use prepositions inappropriately, or when they can't manage even simple subject predicate agreement. When I hear errors I almost go ballistic and I usually correct people making these kinds of errors whoever they are on the spot. I also hat it when professional choirs singing latin language church music fail to pronounce the words properly. It angers and frustrates me and greatly diminishes the listening experience.

Not so much that. Consider this, most of us were raised on, "talking/conversing/speaking properly" and the correct syntax. For those in the spectrum, if something is mis-spelled/typed/pronounced/used, it can grate on our nerves . . . mainly out of it NOT making sense to us. Its similar to how some people cannot accept excuses/legitimate reasons for something others do or don't do, or how certain habits will drive one group of people nuts and not another. On the upside of it, we're open about what does annoy us . . . most people just keep silent until it hits their boiling point.

Actually, that's consonance. Alliteration is repetition of the sound at the beginning of a word.

Twitter is a great word to hate.

I feel almost embarrassed when I hear it.

I know people who twitter but I never will.

By the name alone twittering just seems like a ridiculous waste of time.

"Teeth", I always pronounce it with a f sound on the end.

"An", I always just use "a" unless I'm writing a site or test or something.
