I did rifelry when I was younger <before I knew that my trembling was epilepsy related "oh no, it's just the natural figure 8 everyone has, you just need to hold the rifle steadier" ... steadier my ass....> I also pulled targets at a few large bore riflry competitions, that was immensly fun, got to shoot off a 50 cal that was just freaking enourmous, being NEAR the gun scared me, pulling the trigger just, wow, <I blame machismo and peer pressure> I was weird the rest of that day, I missed the target by probably 15 yards
lately I have been interested in getting back into it, and I would like to try some large bore stuff <not 50 cal, you don't need that for anything> and I'd definitly like to do small bore again
I am not a pistol fan, and I've never fired a shotgun, I should, I just have never gotten around to it, shotgun range 30 miles out of town too
I am fascinated by designs and how elegantly simple semi auto's designs are, esp high powered ones, how the bolt remains locked while chamber pressures are high, yet are still able to cycle several times per second.

So who knows about gun laws in the US? I mean, what level of gun can you have without a license and what kinds of guns are completely illegal? I just know that my neighbor had a browning m-1 and an m-16 that we shot a few years ago. The cops showed up after I had left, but apparently they were legit.
And what about gun laws in the UK? I would presume they are stricter. Somebody here said they are stricter in Australia as well.
As I understand, gun laws vary a lot between States in the USA. The UK I believe has very very strict gun laws. I thinks extremely hard to get a high powered rifle or handgun there.
In Australia (where I am) it varies a bit b/w States, even though they are supposed to be uniform. Handguns are difficult to get, and you can only get them for target shooting. I think (I do not shoot pistols) that any calibre >38 is banned.
It is no more difficult to get a 458 Win Magnum rifle than it is to get an air rifle or shotgun. Semi autos are banned. Pump action shotguns are banned (so you cannot have a 12ga pump, but you can have a 30-06 pump
)
The process is:
Take a firearms safety course and test (run by Police in Victoria)
Fill out an 8 page application form, supported and signed by your spouse and a responsible person in the community
Show you have a genuine reason for wanting one (Being a member of a shooting/hunting club is not compulsory, but helps get things thru)
Pay the fee.
Each time you want to acquire a firearm fill out a form and demonstrate reasons why you need it (not as bad as it sounds, I need a 12 ga skeet gun, 12 ga trap gun, 12 ga duck gun, 20 ga quail gun, 410 for general practice, 22 for target, 22 for hunting, spare 22, 22-250 for foxes, 270 for pigs/goats, 30-06 for hog deer, 338 win mag for sambar deer, plus a 308 general purpose as a spare.
I don't have all these, but I could.
If you have more than 6, the police knock on your door sometime without warning to inspect your storage facilities (there are minimum standards).

I'm no expert, but I think:
- Fully automatic handguns are illegal
Weapons carried in your vehicle must be visible
Conceled weapons require a permit
3-day waiting period to purchase a gun
"In Florida it takes 2 weeks to get a divorce but only 3 days to buy a gun. Divorce... gun... divorce... gun..."
There is significant variation in gun laws from state to state.
