This. An in-crowd would suggest that one would be required to meet certain criteria in order to intermingle with that crowd. On WP, it's the same phenomena as any other forum: a couple of regulars post in random a lot, and therefore grow more familiar with each other's posting styles and maybe grow keen of each other. But the regular poster body does not close itself off from semi-regulars or once-a-week posters.

I've been on another forum where there are proper cliques, and one of its characteristics is that there'll be posters who'll treat you hostilely (is this a word? it looks weird :? ) unless you've gone through the 'initiation' of one of the cliques. Hm.

Was that the time when a few people were derailing every thread with banter and talks about cupcakes, and making it impossible for the people who started the threads to talk about serious issues, and refusing to take it to Random, or was it just another of the usual petty "some people are more popular than me" complaints? Because the former thing was actually a problem.

No, it was the later. And also making threads about specific members which then resulted in a semi-formed unspoken rule where sometimes you can make a thread about a member or sometimes not (and it's not always based on if it's negative either).

For refference:
the current hot aspies chat thread was created because people complained that only a few members were posted and it wasnt pictures(used to be pictures only)

It seems to me that the WP In Crowd are the people who have the most in common with each other. The people who fit the majority in any way, shape or form. There seems to me that there are three different types of In Crowds on WP.

Yeah, I kind of see that too, that there are a few different 'groups'. Not really 'In Crowds', just groups of people who get along conversationally with each other. Some seemed linked by age, others by attitude, or interests. I haven't counted them though.

I think some aspects of autism may inhibit the formation of classic 'In Crowds' of the 'We're cool and your not variety', which if true, indicates not all characteristics of autism are bad.

There was I believe something more like an 'In Crowd' when I first joined, but it seems to have diminished.

That's my take on it as well. I've noticed such categories. However, WP is a huge family and since we're all individuals, not everybody will agree on the same things. I've learned to keep some things to myself most of the time. Another thing about WP is that I also need to guard my heart and not open up too much about my interests and feelings. People are entitled to believe what they want. I know myself enough to know what and who I'm like. I've also learned over my past 10 years on WP to connect with as many members as I can.

To me the in crowd is a core group of members who do an equal amount of prolific posting
in the same areas and have a good handle on who's who and what's what. Doesn't mean
they are special, just means they are always present.

But the thing I don't get is; how can there be an in crowd on WP?

I can see how people might feel a bit out of it sometimes. Like if you've been away for a while and the dynamics change between different people.

But I wouldn't call that an in crowd thing, it's just the nature of things.

I haven't thought of it that way until now. That's a good way of looking at it. :)

Here is the definition of In-crowd from a few sources:

Oxford: a small group of people perceived by others to be particularly fashionable, informed, or popular.

Macmillan: a small group of people who are considered fashionable or important and who allow only very few people to join them

Online Slang: the most popular kids in school, who don't speak or sit with nerds.

Urban: a bunch of insecure people who all think they are so f****n cool, and they have to make fun of everyone else who they dont consider to be 'cool' ha! cool is being an individuall not being exactly the same as the people you call frends. define cool.......im waiting!

___

What I noticed is that the in-crowd is always defined as a the popular group, but sometimes has a dark-side connotation of looking down upon or excluding others. So my guess is that it can go both ways, depending upon the people who make it up. The fact that it is limited in number alone is not necessarily a arrogant thing, as groups do seem to have a critical mass size-wise as far as what is functional. Most forum groups seem to come in, in the 5-10 range. I suspect it is very difficult for larger ammounts of people to retain their cohesion, comfort/familiarity.

Though being popular/social is not something one normally associates with folks on the spectrum, group dynamics is not absent and their is relativity. Not all regulars here have always been on the spectrum either. So yes, an in-crowd can form here, and I thought there was one for a while. I haven't been on most of the sub-forums for a long time, so do not know if one still exsists. But some of the folks who made it up don't seem to post much if at all anymore.

So...you get your face 'rubbed' in 'it'?

And some group of individuals does this to you on a regular basis?

Do they do it to you intentionally? Or unintentionally?
