Europeans got to experience the joys of television 20 years before North Americans.

Really?

Americans started to own TVs in the late forties, and fifties (even though it was invented long before that). I have never heard of ordinary Europeans watching TV until the same postwar era that Americans started to get TVs.

A common myth is that our radio and TV broadcasts are traveling forever in space, so that ETs can watch/listen to them. Truth is out beyond about three light years the signal strength is so weak that there is nothing to watch/listen to.

The organism with the largest known continuous mass is a fungus.

audio tapes/cassettes made under the ampex grand master brand, have a life expectancy of less than 40 years. so if you have anything precious recorded on a grand master cassette or open reel tape, better check its playability ASAP. same for radio shack gold tapes.

There are people who actually claim that WW2 was an attempt at genocide against Germans.

It worked pretty well as one, though. They lost a lot of land and were forcibly expelled from it. Keeping the Weimar Republic would have been a much better deal, but unfortunately that’s not how people work.

Screw em. They were forced to lay in the beds they made for themselves. Forcefully expelled from land they thought they could steal from Poland and other Eastern European countries. There are only three wars the USA took part in in which I think without question the good guys won. They were the American Civil War, WW2, and Vietman (yes, Vietnam, you read that right).

Right  I’m talking about land which was already part of Germany before the Nazis invaded anything. Every country is made of “land they thought they could steal” from someone else if you go far back enough in time, and they can always right till they can’t, or, in other words, right till some other country can steal it from them.

If the sun were the size of a tennis ball (in Los Angeles), the closest star to it, Proxima Centauri, would be in Texas.

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, savoy, kohlrabi, and gai lan are all cultivars of the same species.

Tomatoes and buckwheat are fruits.

Peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes.

Ancient Romans had vending machines.

A little more than half of your genome was formed when your mother was an embryo. All of the egg follicles a woman has were formed when she was an embryo.

The female phenotype is the human default. If the SRY gene fails, or the person lacks functional androgen receptors, they will look female.

A hermaphrodite human is not defined as an someone with both a penis and vagina. It's someone with both ovarian and testicular tissue.

Males have penises and females have clitorises. The male analogy to the vagina is the that place your testes go when you are cold.

Some males have a uterus and internal vagina because of a genetic defect that prevented their mullerian duct from being absorbed during fetal development. It's called "Persistant Mullerian Duct Syndrome". Most never find out.

There is no such language as "Chinese". What we call Chinese is a group of "dialects" spoken in China which are sometimes different enough to be mutually unintelligible between speakers. The official dialect is Mandarin. The "ching chong" sound many Americans associate with Chinese is Cantonese, a dialect spoken by a small minority of Chinese people.

The distance between the U.S. and Russia is 51 to 55 miles.

There is genetic evidence that native Americans discovered Europe (Iceland) before Europeans discovered America.

Skin cells and brain cells both develop from the same cell layer in the embyro.

If the Earth were a finite flat disc with fairly uniform mass distribution, we would perceive it as bowl shaped and we would perceive walking away from the center was walking up hill....the center would flood. It would not be able to maintain this shape and it would eventually pull itself in to a spheroid.

If the Earth were an infinite plane (ignoring all of the reasons this can't exist) gravity would depend on the thickness.

Most objects are translucent or transparent to most forms of light.

Our sun outputs most of it's power in the green wavelength.

On a clear day, the sky on Mars is bluer than the sky on Earth. The red color is from the dust.

Mars reaches up to 80F degrees on it's equator.

Venus is hotter than Mercury.

The pull of gravity from the Earth in the orbit of the space station is not much less than that on the ground. The "weightlessness" is from the speed the space station needs to travel to keep it from hitting the ground. You could produce the same effect on a craft near the ground if it could travel fast enough.

The lifespan of some common species of ants can be as long as 15 years. Queens can live up to 30 years.

Lobsters appear to be genetically immortal. They only die of old age when the energy required to molt exceeds the amount of energy they can generate.

Bees exhibit self doubt.

Multiple animal species can learn to understand aspects of human language but humans still can't understand non human language.

Dolphins name each other.

Feeding severely malnourished individuals the wrong foods can kill them. They can develop a life threatening condition called "Re-feeding syndrome".

Hooved mammals start out with 5 digit buds.

Sea mammal tails are not fused legs. They are just tails.

Peaches and nectarines are the same species. Peaches used to be called "fuzzy nectarines" or nectarines used to be called "hairless peaches".

American yams are a variety of sweet potatoe. Real yams are a different species of plant.

The Earth is closer to the sun when it's winter in the norther hemisphere than when it is summer in the northern hemisphere. Winter in the norther hemisphere is cold because the tilt reduces the flux of solar energy (amount of energy per area).

Touchscreens existed in the 80s (they didn't work well).

The xG cell phone standards were developed in the 80s.

Sony started out as a company that made plastic connectors in a backyard shed. The name is invented and intended to sound like "sunny".

Kaiser Permanente started out as an agreement between construction companies and a fledgling doctor to fulfill construction workers compensation responsibilities.

Greek was the language of upper class Romans and vulgar Latin was the language of the lower class Romans.

Cleopatra the 7th wasn't Egyptian.

Ancient Athenian women lived much like Afghani women under the Taliban, having to wear "burqas" and being sequestered to their homes.

The first crusades weren't military campaignes. It was a bunch of wonton religious hippie zealots running amok in to the Levant and middle east by the tens of thousands.

It's actually fairly easy to be struck by lightening.

Being cold does not cause people to catch a cold. Flu and cold viruses are more common in winter because the virses survive longer in the cold, the cold air dries out nasal passages, and people coop up inside more.

Babies don't like quietness.

The U.S. National Anthem is not the entire Star Spangled Banner. The Star Spangled Banner contains more versus that talks about freedom for everyone and that clearly wasn't applicable at the time.

Apple pie is not American.

Taco Bell does not serve Mexican food. It serves Tex Mex.

Magpies pass the mirror self recgonition test.

A tennis ball located where? Or is it a joke implying Texas is far away from everywhere? :P

businessman/scientist George W. Meek wrote a book describing this phenomenon (with photographs) called "after we die, then what?" he took pics of himself sitting in a chair with special film and special non-visible lighting below 600 nanometers wavelength, and the photo shows he was indeed translucent under those conditions, you could see the whole of the chair without a body blocking any of it.
