Ever heard of Wallace's Line? That's what it's called. It separates Australian-type animals and plants from "regular" animals and plants.

Nope, but I'll look it up.

You won't find most marsupials, eucalypti, or other such "Australian" species west of the Wallace Line.

You do find crocs in Australia, actually. I wonder if they are native, or were introduced to Australia by Man.

The crocs in Australia are native to Australia, and found nowhere else.

I always thought they were similar to alligators.

They are almost identical to alligators, really, in lots of ways.

But the Australian species are Australian only. They are only slightly different than alligators and crocodiles elsewhere, at least superficially.

There's something going on pertaining to "Australian" and "normal" flora and fauna which I really should do research on.

It's supposed to be random but we mostly use it as a chat thread :D

You just won't find kangaroos and wallabies west of the Wallace Line. Is there a electroshock fence at the Wallace Line or something?

If "normal" species are introduced to Australia, disaster happens.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that this land has been isolated from other main continents for so long since it separated. I don't know.

That makes sense what you say--and I've heard that theory, too.

But I get the feeling it's beyond that. there is something that's adversive to Australian species to the west of the Wallace line. They just don't go beyond that Line, unless forced to by humans.

Very fascinating!

Yeah, you're right. I just looked up Wallace Line. Our animals are very different.

I just came up with that theory then. I'd never even given it any thought before. Climate perhaps? I don't know.

I think they've got Kookaburras in Africa (or wherever Tarzan is supposed to be from) because every Tarzan movie I've ever seen always has Kookaburra sound effects in the background. Either that, or it's just Hollywood's idea of what's in Africa.

It's hard to be random after being random for 12 years.

P.S.
Australia is the largest island and the smallest continent in the world.
