It's just trying to make sure you're a human and not a spambot, with the implication being that spambots can't bypass captchas... which I don't think is the case.

But yeah, I think when Alex was choosing a CAPTCHA system, he could have chosen one that didn't say that, especially with the implications the word "robot" has here.

But it's bloody annoying. I mean, how many MANY time do I have to prove I'm not a robot?

Sometimes, you get the answer right and it gives you the tick and it still throws you back into edit mode, sometimes with what you've just typed disappears.

Sometimes, it won't let you post at all and you just keep trying to post and it won't let you get past that.

It's a defective system and we're all getting tired of it.

Find something better!

That's why you submit your post, hit the "back" button, hit submit again, and it works 99.9% of the time. It's not rocket science, but it is annoying. I've only had it glitch up and erase what I was going to post, and that was earlier on today, but I was able to recover it simply by hitting the "back" button a couple of times.

For whatever reason, multiquoting, or quotes within quotes, really seem to trigger it. Multi paragraph posts do too.

And yes, I do seriously think Alex needs to find a different anti-DDoS system, one that doesn't get confused so easily. I don't think it's the CAPTCHA system's fault that so many users are being mistaken for spambots, though it's certainly not keeping the actual spambots out. The CAPTCHAs are annoying to solve, sure, but they're not the reason why you're seeing them in the first place; the faulty anti-DDoS system is.

I will put up with the CAPTCHAs if it means I still get to be on WP :alien:

I do hit the back button.

I've also had to resort to highlighting all I've typed and stick it in the windows clipboard, so I can just paste it all back in.

Don't insult my intelligence. I know it's not rocket surgery.

My point is, WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE COMPENSATING FOR A DEFECTIVE SYSTEM!

What appears to be rocket science is them getting it right!! !

Dedicated Denial Of Service? Ha - it's not going to stop that. That works on IP addresses and is executed externally. It's got nothing to do with posting.

Do you even know what you're talking about?

DDoS's works on taking a site down by tying up all of its available connections. It's got nothing to do with posting spam.

@ mr_bigmouth_502

A Dedicated Denial of Service is where a hacker (usually a Black Hat) has several/many zombie 'puters that they can control remotely and collectively send a bunch of SYN packets (connection attempts) to a Site and don't complete them by responding to the SYN/ACK.

They just keep sending SYNs from EVERYWHERE. Tying up the server and effectively, disabling it.

Do you even know how TCP/IP works?

reCAPTCHA has NOTHING to do with DDoS.

You're talking through your hat! (not a White, Gray or Black Hat, I suspect)

And by the way, the crappy software is not called CAPTCHA. It's reCAPTCHA! And it's crap.

It should be renamed reCRAPTCHA!

reCAPTCHA is NOT going to stop a Dedicated Denial of Service attack.

DDoS happens long before posting happens! That's not what it's even about.

You need to read up more on bots and what they do and how they do it.

What's going on here has NOTHING to do with DDoS.

If I wanted to, I could take down a site with DDoS. I used to do that. I used to take down kiddie porn sites with this method. Flood them with SYN packets and disable them. Even after they reset their servers.

I know this stuff back to front, inside out and upside down.

LOL, Nice aspieism! I was actually waiting for the literal explanation to pop up...it's like playing on a person's instincts, someone here was gonna do it. I have a bad habit of doing it myself, takes one to know one kind of thing.

I didn't spend ages typing it for nothing. Mr Big Mouth doesn't know what he's talking about. It has NOTHING to do with DDoS.

I know this sh!t back to front. You should be listening to me! TO ME - LIKE NO ONE DOES - BUT I KNOW ABOUT THESE THINGS IN THEIR ENTIRETY

This has NOTHING to do with DDoS attacks. That goes to show Mr Big Mouth doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

It's either a case of, reCAPTCHA is defective software or they haven't configured it correctly!

SIMPLE AS THAT!

And it certainly didn't stop Barkba (or whatever his name was) from posting over 16 different threads of spam, a few days ago

it is a hassle but there are much worse things to worry about.
