I get it, the CAPTCHA is what pisses everyone off, but what I was trying to say is that it's Cloudflare's anti-DDoS technology that's triggering it, at least from my observations. Having to work around it annoys me too, in fact if I had any Javascript coding experience, I'd consider making a Greasemonkey script to get around it. Then again, such a script may end up being used by the spammers. I don't know, I'd probably have to talk to Alex about it.

How funny, a post about bypassing Cloudflare verifications doesn't ring any alarms, yet a multi-paragraph post, or a post with a lot of quotes in it, will. Just goes to show how "intelligent" it is.

Also, as evidenced by the number of spambots that are here, CloudFlare clearly isn't doing its job. I think a different anti-DDoS system is in order. I don't know how well it actually protects against denial of service attacks, but I don't want to risk trouble to try and see. Maybe someone could post a groundbreaking thread that makes it to Slashdot, and then we'll get one in the form of "the Slashdot effect".

Don't you get it?

DDoS happens WAY BEFORE a connection is established and any data (SPAM) is sent through.

TCP/IP connections to servers start with a SYN packet. (SYNchronize) sent from the remote host. (Your computer)

The server responds with a SYN/ACK packet(SYNchronize ACKnowledgement) (The server is saying, "Yes, I see you want to connect to me). I'll await you ACK.

The zombie computer never sends back an ACK packet (ACKnowledgement) to complete the handshake!

It leaves the server hanging.

Get dozens of zombie computers doing this to the same Web server at the same time and you have a DDoS attack.

It has NOTHING to do with SPAM.

That's why it's called dedicated. Many computers are DEDICATED in pretending to establish a connection to the server and don't complete the connection.

SPAM happens after a connection is complete (after the SYN - SYN/ACK - ACK) handshake stage and then does it's dirty work.

Really, you should read about what you're talking about before you say anything. Otherwise, to those who know this stuff, you just come off as someone who means well but knows nothing.

You're still on my list of friends by the way but please, learn what you're typing about before you type!

This is what I'm talking about:

This happens WAY before any DATA is sent through. It's the FIRST thing that happens. Before a connection is even established.

THIS is where a DDoS attack occurs!

I knew that DDoSs had nothing to do with the spambots or captcha problems here, I was just pointing out that the site's problems were probably being caused by another part of CloudFlare, which is primarily an anti-DDoS system. Maybe Alex could keep CloudFlare just for that one purpose, the one thing it does well, and implement other solutions for the rest.

But yeah, I'll admit that I know very little about TCP/IP, other than that it can act really strangely sometimes. Either that, or it's just Windows' networking stack, since I seem to have more problems with that than what Linux normally uses.

I also have a bad tendency to "mansplain" and try to correct people. I know it's something I need to work on, but I feel like I have an insatiable need to do it. I don't know.

You're alright mr_bigmouth_502, and you're still one of my friends :D

I also have a tendency to correct people. Hence, the above.

I suggest you read about TCP/IP. It's very SMART.

I'd recommend these three books I just dragged off my bookshelf. These are 3 of many I own (but my favourites - I've read them many times over) but they are THE BEST if you want to truly know how TCP/IP works. It's well worth the read. TCP/IP is REALLY SMART!

I placed them in the order you should read them!

Now, when you think you're ready for writing Socket programs for UNIX in C/C++, come back and talk to me again. I'll also be able to help you out there as well!

"When and if fascism comes to America...it will not even be called 'fascism'; it will be called, of course, 'Americanism.'" --Professor Halford E. Luccock of Yale Divinity School; New York Times article from September 12, 1938, page 15

My most favourite RFCs are:

RFC 768 - User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
RFC 791 - Internet Protocol (IP)
RFC 793 - Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)
RFC 821 - Simple Mail Transer Protocol (SMTP)

Email:::

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is still going strong :) (outgoing)
but
POP3 (Post Office Protocol Version 3) has died out (THANK GOD) (incoming)
taken over by
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) :) (incoming - left on the server)

I'm glad IMAP servers took off. I've been waiting for this time for AGES!
