none is "better" for all are tasty ingredients in a sonic stew.

Which is more essential in a small jazz group, percussion or a bass instrument like double bass/ bass trombone/ tuba/ sousaphone?

it is like a sandwich, which needs bread and a filling of some kind. the bread pieces by themselves would make a plain meal. the filling by itself would be amorphous without the support of the bread. percussion/rhythm is the bread and bass is the filling. the melody is in the preparation/cooking.

Q- choose a bass instrument- a sub-contrabass saxophone [BBb tubax],
or-
a sub-contrabass flute.

I will take the baritone sax any day.
