when i am going to spread butter on whatever i intend to spread it on, i always cut a knob off the hard refrigerated block and place it on a flattened paper muffin cup and place it in the microwave for 20 seconds on 10% power to soften it.
so today, i had a date and walnut loaf that i had sliced a few pieces off, and when i went to thaw the butter, i was horrified that i had run out of paper muffin cups, but i decided to soldier on and be daring and attempt to spread the cold butter on the slices, but it tore them to pieces!
so then i cut another 2 slices of date and walnut loaf and cut a new knob of butter off the block, and placed the knob on a plastic plate to thaw. after 20 minutes, the butter had still not softened to the degree i require.
after 40 minutes, the butter had softened adequately, but the slices of loaf had dried out significantly in that time and felt stale, so i had to cut another 2 slices of date loaf, and after i buttered them, i realized my appetite window for that dish had passed, and i no longer felt like them.
