Something I wanted to show you.
I came across these in the park today - three coot babies with their parents. They're VERY young, their heads are still bald, so they can't be older than a few days. Basically newly-hatched. Not very experienced at swimming either, they were holding themselves over water all right (would be seriously bad if they weren't, haha) but not very coordinated and sometimes accidentally swimming in circles. Anyway, they were VERY cute, and I took some photos.
Here are the three babies with one parent. (I don't know whether it's daddy or mommy.)
In case you were wondering: THIS is what a baby coot looks like up close. Very ugly and very cute at the same time. This one didn't seem to have a concept of "danger" yet, so it came very close. I could have touched it. (I didn't, of course.) It's eating some kind of water plant.
Here, the baby is being fed.
Happy family: Parents feeding their babies. The babies were seemingly eating all the time.

It's normal for very young coots to be bald. They seemed to be perfectly healthy, too.
And yes, it's unusual to get anywhere near them. Coots are usually VERY shy. Especially when they have babies. I haven't had that opportunity before either.

Those are very good photos.
I've got some of them in their nest I might post in the photo thread sometime. I saw one of the parents bullying one of their offspring, pecking at it. The number of offspring decreased over the weeks and only about half made it to adulthood.

Oh..I wasn't questioning their health or whether it's normal or not... I just think it just looks like that:P (since they're bald and their heads are bright red).

Thank you, outlier. Please do! I like all kinds of birds and I'd love to see the nest.
Hope nothing like that happens to these birds. Though the parents were very caring and attentive so I'm not overly worried.

they are beautiful. I took my niece to our local park the other day and we saw a family there. I love the way they feed their young i mean i saw a family of ducks and the ducks just scoffed the food and left none for the babies.

Not going to happen to these babies. If anything, they'll be fed too much and get fat.
