I once knew 3 people (at the same time) who had no sense of smell, they concealed it so I didn't realise until later. Two of them became a couple ugh, there'd be too many problems with that!

My sense of smell is Extremely Accute

Though smoking cigarettes seem to offset it

Every time I try to quit, I can't handle all the smells

I have almost no sense of smell; if I do smell something, it's very muted to me and strong to everyone else.

There shouldn't be a problem with two non-smelling people being together though, as far as I can tell. A good personal cleaning standard should be enough to resolve it, but I suppose some don't keep up with that.

With fire, I would hope there'd be some sort of alarm system that made noise. Burning like food... well, yeah, that could be a problem. Of course, it's not a good idea to just leave food cooking without some sort of a timer, but I suppose that's not always possible.

talking about two people living together who cannot smell things very well
and the possible ramifications thereof, is hauntingly familiar
Extremely, to the point of Goose Bumps, seriously
I have no idea why, it just is, yet I'm ...
Concerned
Interested
Provoked
Afraid
Just like the proverbial train wreck, only this is real, Very Real, Hmmm

If you lurked around for awhile before you joined, it's quite possible you've seen a similar conversation. Topics tend to repeat around here, and I can remember at least one other sense of smell topic a while back. I don't remember it going to the point of couples and their smelling problems, but I said my piece early on and left it at that, so it might have gone there.

Beyond that, both Postperson and I have made numerous posts around, and though I can't recall any sort of conversation, you very well could have seen both of our writing enough to mistake it for a previous conversation.

Or maybe you're just deja vuing for no real reason. I get like that a lot if that makes you feel any better (probably won't, but there it is).

It is a SYMPTOM called Anosmia they should seek a medical advice

Causes of anosmia include:

Upper respiratory tract infection (e.g., sinusitis or the common cold)[3]
Nasal polyps
Hypothyroidism
Head trauma, damage to the ethmoid bone[4]
Dementia with Lewy bodies
Tumors of the frontal lobe
Parkinson's Disease[5]
Alzheimer's Disease[6]
Toxins (especially acrylates, methacrylates[7] and cadmium[8][9])
Old age[10]
Kallmann syndrome
Laryngectomy with permanent tracheostomy
Esthesioneuroblastoma is an exceedingly rare cancerous tumor that originates in or near the olfactory nerve. Symptoms are anosmia (loss of sense of smell) often accompanied by chronic sinusitis.[11]
Intranasal drug use
Samter's triad
Foster Kennedy syndrome

Wikipedia, hey? Guessing by the little [number] things. I appreciate the info though.

I lost most of my sense of smell during a particularly nasty headcold. Never got it back after that.

A common cold only temporarily impairs smell, very unusual to be a definitive feature.

In your case, you could possibly have something called nasal polyposis

The diagnosis of ethmoiditis is based on the person's history and a physical exam. Nasal endoscopy, an examination of the back of the nasal cavity using a narrow tool, is especially helpful. A CT scan can also show swelling of the sinuses.

I can demand that you call me doktah now :D

Nonsense! I'm Dr.Phil! <.< (joking)

As for me, my sense of smelling is rather strong, except for having one of nostrils blocked most of the time. =/

I've always had a poor sense of smell, never really thought about it much.
