What are children's TV programs trying to teach my kid? Watching Dora right now, they're in space and she mentions, "we've made it to the Milky Way!"

Guess what? You were already in the Milky Way!

I hate it when they do that to kids!Oh, that reminds me, why is it that EVERYTHING not of this Earth is "space..."? A space rock, a space cookie, space aliens...

They're not from space, they're from their planet, went to space and you made contact.

And the ability of someone the size of you or I hiding behind a moon or a planet can still be seen as if they were hiding behind a tree...

Or just because a planet is purple, doesn't mean that everything on that planet is purple. Earth is largely blue but blue is one of, if not the rarest colors in nature.

You realize, of course, that you're critiquing the reality content of a show in which a young girl is permitted to wander parentless around the Central American jungle, accompanied primarily by a talking monkey with a predilection for wearing nothing but a pair of boots...

meh. they're still serving as interim educators. A little fantasy is okay but when they start teaching my kid things that are untrue, that's when I take issue. I don't mind a talking whale who wears sunglasses teaching my kid but if it teaches her that 7+2=12, I'll take issue.

It kinda depends - the name originally refers to the smudge of white light across the sky, which is most of (but not all, specifically not much that's in the halo nor anything that is both reasonably close to us and out of the galactic plane) of the Galaxy. So while it has picked up the broader meaning of "the whole Galaxy of which the most obvious feature from Earth is a big white stripe of stars" the narrower meaning of "the big white stripe of stars" is reasonable enough. From a certain point of view, as that old geezer with the laser sword would say.

Not that that was likely uppermost in the minds of the programme makers.
