People like to put down Freud but IMO while some of his stuff is supposedly out of date I found it and Carl Yaung, and the father of Psychology Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt far more interesting than learning about the DSM! Back when it began it had I believe 9 disorders NOW there's a disorder FOR EVERYTHING!! !! !! !! !! ! Also for some odd reason Psychiatry focuses STRICTLY on pills (or atleast the ones I've dealt with) One dismissed Asperger's since it's not something that can be cured with pill OMG!! !! !! ! Also while it looks silly by todays standards I LIKE THE "COUCH" idea!! !! !!

Now adays it's sitting in a stiff chair while they ask you 1,000,000 questions OH and we can't FORGET (Are you suicidal/hear voices GOTTA PUT THOSE QUESTIONS IN THERE!! !!) Also not focusing on the issue at hand!! ! If doctors did this they'd be fired/sued!! !! ! Unforutunantly there's a difference between I have a headache compared to an emotional issue they want to focus on other areas for SOME STUPID REASON!! !! !! !

Also I'm sure when dealing with quiet children they think (Oh how do I get this child to open up to me) (repeat behavior for adult Oh this person must not want help or whatever!! !!) One therapist when I told her I didn't take her advice she said "How am I supposed to help you if you don't take my advice?" I said I don't know and blew her off!! ! IMO UHH you should have MORE THAN ONE ADVICE IDEA SHEESH!! !! !! !! !! ! Sadly overall I think the field of dealing with clients will get worse and BTW if you have a good Psychologist etc. STICK WITH THEM SINCE MOST SUCK!! !! (My Psychology teacher ROCKED THOUGH!! !! !) LOL! What are your thoughts?? (BTW still want to become a Psycholigist a research one that is LOL!)

Cognitive psychology may be more "fun" than the DSM etc. but it's a crock of sh*t.

The more "scientific" branches of psychology are advancing a ton as technology improves and the body of research expands. But in terms of where they stand today, neuroscience is so far from any kind of applied utility for actually helping people in day-to-day life (although it is fascinating), and behavioral psychology (my field) is being hamstrung by closed-mindedness and misunderstanding, both from the outside and within the field itself.

And I totally agree with you about the pill culture that's exploded in the clinical field (which is what I hope to go into eventually), and that is some bull sh*t. I'm also totally with you on the couch thing  I want a dark, musty office with a wild old red couch and a 1500 pound mahogany desk for myself (with giant matching wall to wall bookcases of course) where my clients can smoke cigs and I will pour scotches for them and myself and listen until they outright ask me chime in.

Back when it was a hobby it was cool, and no one belived it. We dont get True Belivers till about 1960, yea, the Modern Era, sure. Then people who could not pass math took Psychology.

Now I do think other people can help, I do have questions, and ask a Chinese waitress where I eat. She is spot on about most things.

Jung was great because he was into art, tripping to India, toking on some Temple Ball, and getting enlightened.

So what could you learn from a person who grew up in the burbs, got an American education, we rank between Bulgaria and Albania, went to Boring U, and hung with the other Psych Majors?

Face it, it is for future welfare workers who cannot hang for a Master in Social Work, another great field. None of these people write papers that are published in peer reviewed journals, because none of them agree about what they are doing.

The action is in Neurology and Genetics, WAy out of their intellectual level, it takes math and stuff.

Any martial arts teacher will tell you, eat right, get lots of exercise, and sleep regular hours, the rest will take care of it's self.

There is progress, In California you can get a script for weed due to an emotional reaction to a bad hair cut. Talking about it would only prolong your agony.

The main problem with Psychology is getting people to fit what was in the books. They all get it wrong, even with leading questions, hints, and examples.

As someone from the old days, Bartenders were much better. They see a wide range of people, where the Psychs get sent a narrow but diverse group, and have a half hour to figure out their entire life.

They have not figured out their own life, are not a cheerful lot, and fall short in the friends thing.

They are so aware of their culture they are invested in commercial real estate, and were flipping houses in Vegas, California, and Florida.

There are plenty of Jungian analysts around if that's what you'd prefer. Just Google "Jungian" plus your city to find one. Then call their office and ask if they are taking any new patients, and tell them what kind of insurance you've got, then make an appointment and take the bus to get there. You're going to have to take your mental health care into your own hands if you want anything to change--complaining on WP about your psychiatrist isn't going to make your life any different.

I don't like your attitude, but I DO like your perspective, and in a way I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. I can't speak for the field comprehensively, nor can I affect why the people that end up in the field do so. I hear a lot of s**t talk on here about experiences with shrinks, and to me that is really sad and I have trouble relating because the only shrink I've ever seen was awesome.

I want to give some perspective on where I'm coming from and where I hope to go, and not because I feel "challenged" or otherwise butthurt by your post, but because I largely agree and have meticulously eschewed the traditional "track" from day one. Psychology has been a "hobby" of mine since I was able to begin to comprehend it. I've known that ultimately I want to do clinical shrinking (and NOT psychiatry) for a living since I was 15. In preparation (in essence to give myself the broadest perspective possible) I got my bachelor's in bioanthropology, and am getting a master's in behavior analysis (the most empirically scientific of the psych disciplines by far), before even touching clinical psychology. When I say this is old school meets new school, the "old school" part goes back to day one.

I am also somewhat of a drunk, and I am with you 100% on the bartender anecdote. Obviously society is such that that can never become the norm, but again I can only account for myself; and if you read my previous post, you will see that that is the exact style of shrinking that I am going for.

Also I agree with you on the up-and-coming potential of genetics; the only times I ever wavered from my desire to get into the clinical field was when I was considering going towards genetics instead.

Although it was a little militant for my tastes, inventor, that was a great post that addressed (however subjectively) many very pertinent issues to the topic at hand, and to my own personal take on it.

Cauterize out the remaining feminism and add some more quantitative methods and it can join the real sciences.

Psychology is never going to join the "real sciences" With the present technology (and, as far as I can foresee, any technology developed for a long time to come), there is simply no way that quantitative methods can be developed that are definitive enough to be on the level.

A whole lot of very creative semi-quantitative measures have been developed in the field that mimic those of the hard sciences pretty well. Not to say I don't think the pursuit of such methods should continue, but anyone in psychology who values "joining the real sciences" above all else is badly misguided.

I left something out, I favor the couch, the classic Fainting Couch, such a great prop, and around since before the Greeks till 75 years ago. Soft dark red leather with diamond pleat and buttons. Like your desk it should be oversized, with high ceilings, tall windows, with drapes, all things to reduce the scale of a human in the room.

35 years ago the new profession claimed "Holistic" but went for the Priests of Psychobabble, not man in a complex world. The lot I knew from teaching University through on the job training in the community, long before they could get a real job, or hang a shingle, are where I learned of the field.

My Professional qualifications were, I was the best Euro Mechanic in town, and their social status drive caused them to buy cars from Europe. As far as I could tell it was some view that as the founders of Psychology were all from Europe, they held a Euro-Superior view. Being from the pre history of science, they were all going Clinical.

They bought cars, or more correctly, their family did upon graduation, without any local dealer, and with no knowledge of the engineering system behind the development. Like all fields of knowledge, there were founders, schools of engineering, and long developments to reach current design, and that was my interest, I studied the whole history of the company, and the direction of development. In the day it was English, French, German, Italian, and hardly anyone knew Saab.

I had started at fifteen, motorcycles, then was picked up on by the only shop that worked Euro cars, mostly for Doctors, 1960. Often the cars were in the shop for months, as the first thing ordered was the shop manuals, parts lists, from Europe. The parts were also ordered from Europe, as the few dealers did not stock parts, and thought the car should be shipped back to them, New York importer, for repairs. They would mark the parts up 500%, and send the wrong one months later, Europe by boat was faster.

Now the MDs were cool people, often they bought two the same, and sent one to the shop to start with. Once they knew us, their next car came with all the factory paperwork, special tools, and common spare parts. They also wanted to see thier car when we were at the mid point, everything torn down, cleaned, ready to go back together. They were into the art of the machine, when few in America spoke Metric.

Later, my own shop, out west, fifteen years later, with Psychology trying to gain Doctor, Euro, Status. First I doubt they could have found the country that built the car on a map. Next they had no idea of the history, the designers, engineers, who had made the company a great. While most of my problems were just parts orders, from the factory, a few got into letters/drawings about the problem with the Engineer who designed the engine. All designs have flaws that do not show up till a year out from the factory, and new parts are made to overcome the defect, which is why factory parts are current design, and dealer inventory is the old bad stuff.

So into my world came newly minted Clinical Psycholigists. To start with they parked in the front door, then wanted immediate attention. They blew the horn. When I am shimming out a gear set, I do not stop, it has to be right, or it self destructs. When I did get to talking to them I told them to get out of my shop, my light, and go park on the street. They then proceeded to tell me they wanted something fixed and they were in a hurry. My answer was bring it in next Monday. Then they said I had to do it now, beause they could not waste thier time. Did I say Monday? Monday a week is what I meant.

Some continued, I had grease on my hands, shirt, face, and they were trained in the Powers of the Mind. They were told to never darken my door again, Begone foul creature! I did have a reputation, hostile, agressive, whatever is in the DSM for rude.

Other customers were better, parked on the street, stood at the door till I came to talk to them. I would look at the car, get a history and milage, and tell them where they were in factory recomended service. Most just wanted me to fix one thing that they had noticed, and I told them that only when all the parts work together will it work. The occasional miss is because of plugs, carb, timing, and all must be done at once, with an oil change. Most thought I was over charging them, but having no other service in 500 miles, they agreed.

I would book them an hour or two, and educate them about their car as I serviced it, and told them when to bring it back, before it gave problems, and it would never be a problem. Few listened. They skipped the $100 service, and were back behind a tow truck later with a $2,000 job.

I got work through word of mouth, some of my customers had no problems, showed up for regular service, their cars ran. From this same group, for the old talked to the new, I had two repuations. One group described me in DSM terms, thought I should be locked up and put on drugs. The other group said, yes, but he can fix machines. Being the only game in town, they all tried their luck.

I have had all sorts of Clinical Psychology run on me. I would say most lacked people skills. Book learning prepared them to make decisions about other people's lives, but not their own, or how to get their car fixed at a shop.

Looking back, I should have had a couch. Most were so tied up in image and ownership problems. I did find several root causes, some were seeking an expert answer. Most were manipulators, who got a degree in it. Some came and asked my permission to buy a car, for without support, they were doomed. They were my favorite of the class. Coming to a mechanic before buying a car.

They were not the rich kids, but they wanted in, and there was this car that an older person had, he was leaving, they could buy it cheap, but it had problems, and it was the one that I had told to never darken my door again. He was asking too much, I told them what to offer, when, and gave them the card of my tow truck. Most important, never mention my name, or that you spoke with me.

A few days later the car was at my shop, with a pre agreed price, and it became like new. Overall it was less than his asking price, which was about half what it was worth.

This last group saw me as the God of Cars, I could smite with lightning, or bless, and they came to my temple to pray for mercy. They would submit to my power, and were blessed in return.

This was about 1975, nothing about HFA was known, but I am different, always have been. I got a lot of low grade views from my customers, for some said one thing, and some another, and no one was right about the mechanic. On the other side, I saw lots of people going down the same Clinical Psych path, in a fairly common but stressful situation, My Car!

From this I would say they were people, just like my other customers, not as bright in mechanics, but just people. They had a narrow range of behavior, from being the dominate person, pulling in the door, blowing the horn, demanding immediate attention, to totally submissive coming to pray for permission to buy a car. Their education had not prepared them to live in the world, they were stunted children. Their education had not taught them the most important thing, how to learn broadly.

Their largest investment after education, they did not know anything about cars, and the European model they chose. They got in real deep without any knowledge or history. They became dependant on something they did not understand. Education is for Professional life, but it is not like you will be driving a car through that life?

They had not trancended being human, in fact, they were not good at it. They were a little ahead of you amazon_television, had the Masters, were just getting out for field training, starting in their Profession.

I have the uneducated Black guy to compare them to. He could not pay my rates, but was into Euro cars. He knew every model, history, and what parts could be swapped out. He knew his main line, VW, by engine number, for they did make some dogs. He had a lot of social status to overcome, Black, uneducated, and a mechanic. He was also huge and evil looking. I had thousands in tools and parts around.

It took him hardly any time, he had the run of the shop, could use empty space, and we traded parts. He was a master at avoiding conflict, and building trust. He was a product of the getto, and those skills will keep you alive. In a world where everything was stacked against him, he was one of the most functional, fully human, people I have met.

He had to deal with all the conflicts of life, and he was hundreds of years older than my university customers. When they showed up he vanished, my business, but stayed close enough to listen, and then later told me about the person, what they worked from. He was never wrong.

He was like my South China waitress, who lived several lifetimes in China, before coming to America in a shipping container, and working in a celler in China Town New York to pay for her passage. Her family lived in what I would call a small bedroom or large closet. They all worked and 90% of income went for food, and there was never enough. She crossed the world, paid for it, and now can eat every day. Along the way she learned people.

Her daughter has an American birth certificate, is getting the best education, and another twenty years of work, she can watch her daughter live the American life, and not starve to death in old age. She understands English, but barly speaks, for Chinese girls don't.

I meet my own kind. My own life has not been easy, Autistic, but I don't quit. I am open to others of the type, it was not easy, but they made something of it. So if I want to know about a car, I ask a mechanic. Like the Black guy who could not afford me, we trade. The waitress wants her daughter to speak English like I do. When I am speaking with someone else she sends the girl to sit close by and listen. The ABC (American Born Chinese) teens engage me in conversation, the second grader sit near with her coloring book. The teens are the first generation to speak English, but speak Chinese when together. So we put on our English show for the little girl.

What I find is those who rise above their origens have a depth of perception about humans that is lacking in book learning. I do see it as Anthropology. Cultures produce greeters, who can cross boundries. Culture does not carry, but a knowledge of humans is the same. My doubts about Clinical Psychology is it is American Mainstream. My other view is, NT Psychology.

White middle America is still the hardest place for me. I do much better with the rest of the world. As only human skills cross cultural boundries, I find I do have the basics that let me travel, except in my own country, class, race, where I am not welcome. Middle America, American Blacks, Chinese, Islamic, I am welcomed, we do meet at human, and differances are normal.

So my watershed, Behavior, Psychology seeks differances, humanity seeks sameness.

While it is obvious that humans cross out of their cutures for a reason, that they seek goals, people who can help them, and common ground, Psychology lacks a goal. Any way you slice it it is no longer a whole. Anthropology has the same problem, just learning the ways of another culture is not joining with them.

What I see is diverse backgrounds, common goals, common humanity. That is not to say all hairless ground apes are equal, just some can see the ape in very different people, and make contact. I look for that level of sameness.

Psychology looks at a person, their mental process, as a stand alone. The most it can do is make them feel better about being themselves. It lacks being connected to the world. I may be talking about what Jung called the Collective Unconcious. Beyond day to day awareness, we are connected. finding those connections in others are only fragments, but they are strong threads that bind. It is what we seek in friendship, mates, different of course, but a few points of sameness.

As for differances worth study, Genetics does produce Neurology, which I think has a lot to do with Psychology. Am I Autistic? Or am I a Wood Rooster, Scorpio, ENTP? Are there patterns beyond Genetics? All of my characters in this post came up hard, but kept going, and reached the ability to read something in people. The Black guy, the Chinese waitress, my Autistic self, in contrast to the range seen in those who's only challenge was getting a degree. People with high IQs are not the smart ones.

So in this complex pattern of patterns, the Collective Unconcious, what works? Is it the American view of being highly social without any real connection, which seems to be the main cause of our economic problems, our short and tortured marriages, and our vast network of friends, in name only. Or could it be the old view, meaningful personal connections, a few friends, long term, marriage for life, and using what little energy we have to build a personal connection to the collective unconcious through finding the human sameness in others?

A lot can be learned through the study of the Genome, there is not one Psychology, but many. Even then, the study of a human, en vitro, does not show the connections that let them function.

When the study is focused on failure to function, which is needed, it is not all, and that view expanded, get out more, meet more people, leads to a superficial view of mental health. Adversity and depression are natures way of producing change. Our carpet raised and over protected society is producing a lot of mental and social problems. Loss of adversity is loss of meaning. America is living in a world without meaning.

The meaning of psychology is we are like Doctors a have a pill for everything. Back in the 60s they had a good deal of the nation on uppers and downers, the Speed epidemic started with Psychology, now pushed as Ritlin, since the scripts for speed and barbs were taken away. The ony time pills are the answer to life is if you are a drug company, or a local pusher for one.

Treating symptoms is not treating the person, just your bank account and a drug industry. Children are put on drugs to make them robots in school, and it continues for as long as they can get away with it. The rest of the world changed the schools, the teachers, but not the children. They will stand as expert witnesses in court about how to raise children, they don't have any, but once read part of a book and took a test and got a Degree in something that they claim makes them expert.

You can go to school, get a Masters in Fine Art, it does not make you a painter, it is a gifted and talented field and all the education in the world cannot make an artist. A Masters in History does not allow you to drug people into being Historically Correct.

Psychology is not Science or Medicine, it is a New Age Religion.

This Cult of Happy has lead to our current economy, or lack there of, we need an Economy Pill, we need Psychologists, for it is long term Depression.

Behavior Analysis is from Marketing, it was well studied, it is what packaging can sell a shody product. It is often used in Politics, what package of lies will get more than half the votes. Before marketing it was Psychological Warfare, which developed during the Korean War, then was used on the American population.

It was the lacky of the Corporate State, where people were workers and consumers, that exist to make money for Share Holders. Psych Warfare, later Psychology, were their cheerleaders.

I have read hundreds of, this is what an idiot threpist said, threads here, and not one about the coolist thing my shrink said that enlightened me and explained a lot, not one.

The self important back slapping in the field is not supported by any of the people who have dealt with it. Even their mechanic thinks they are an immature lot, living in a state of denial.

Their work in marketing has destroyed what was once the best economy on Earth, sold out for short term goals, and their happy, happy, you should feel good about who you are, as is, has lead to an epidemic of the Obese.

It is what happens when you have a generation raised on drugs, told to take the easy way, to feel empowered by just existing. It has lead to the isolation of the person, having no connection to life, who in a drugged state listens to propaganda telling them to comsume for happiness.

The result is millions of people weighing over 300 pounds waddling forward, feeling good about them selves with the help of pills, an ever growing army like nothing that has ever existed before.

Psychology has produced the ultimate consumer.

I am sticking with the Chinese waitress, she is Reality Based.

IMO Freud is STILL crap. He was very scientifically-minded in his young adult years then then took a turn towards crazy nonsense.

Jung's ideas have made brilliant contributions to comparative cultural studies and personality psuchology, but his school of clinical psychological practice is bunk.

Much of the "Humanistic Psychology" that popped up in the 60s and 70s is feel-good nonsense.

I have a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and she is wonderful. No BS about "Repression" and whatever garbage.

I don't concur completely but I do understand completely. That post was so out of control that I didn't even know what to say, and I felt bad about not responding, but it was on a level that I couldn't even say anything to.

Inventor's perspective is somewhat different from mine, but I didn't challenge it in the first place and he went way above and beyond what would have been necessary if I had. I was thoroughly engrossed and despite the length I read it end to end. What an awesome post. Nostradamus indeed.

Freud did start something, his terms were what he had, there is some hit and miss, but at least he took a shot. Then come the long years of Cocaine addiction, and cigars. While the user will think enhanced perception, history will not, and without his life story, many have tried to apply his later thought.

Jung was great, opened many doors, but taking awareness and using it to change people does not work. In his later years the books brought in good money, I bought a few. The franchise of Clinics failed not because he was wrong, but because all enlightment comes from within. You can not change people, they can change themselves, but as the old saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water..."

In marriage, there are problems, and the most common end of them has been stated many times. We started getting along when we stopped trying to change each other.

I see it as the root of most problems, and I am a supporter of Psychology. First, there are people who will not function in modern society, The least harmfull view is public support, medical care, and hope for the best. Some are so isolated that they have no one to talk to, and a therpist is the best answer. It is better than nothing, which is where some live. It can be the first step, recognition of their humanity, that then leads to speaking with a neighbor, store clerk, an expanding world.

I also favor involentary commitment, six weeks out of the world is better than a house full of bodies and life in prison, intervention does reduce the death rate. Here en vitro works, you are no longer part of parents, spouses, it's vacation time, and it does work. It is long enough for regular meals, some pacing, regular sleep, and it is The Spa of Last Resort, and works wonders.

Eating well, exercise till tired, leads to good sleep and mental change. Pills and a weekly office visit make things worse. Mostly we need to deal with the ape, the animal, it has to eat, move, rest, and nothing replaces that. Walk for ten minutes, run as far as you can, then walk for ten minutes, is the best ape management plan.

I did live through the 60s and 70s, I agree that their was no basis for their views, and in 1974 the DEA took away the script pads, for the uppers and downers were causing big problems. For one, the housewife who consumed a fifth of vodka a day, was given barbs, and the mix will kill you. Truck drivers were given scripts for Bi-fedamines, in several States, and were running non stop from coast to coast. They were the original Tweakers, and the DOT/ICC had to clamp down on 550 miles a day, ten hours rest, for when fifty tons of truck goes wild, the results are ugly. A third of the nation had scripts, and the medicine chest was open to the children.

Like lead in gas the reaction was ending it, Now! It was so banned that it was twenty years later with new classes of drugs when it started up again, and new disorders found to use new drugs, that were not covered under the ban. AS, ADD, AHDH, and drugging school children. Ten years later an Obese epidemic. Are they connected? We have had lots of food, but this never happened before, and it is in children we notice it. It is the health problem that is growing, and will last.

In every case in the past it has been shown that drugs are not the answer, they are the problem.

How can there be a Psychology? We know from WP that male/female present ASDs differently, many view the sexes as sub species, with good reason. Life is very different for the sexes, one size fits all does not work.

All ENTPs are alike, until you put a hundred in the same room, just as all autists are alike, except on WP. All humans are more than can be defined in a word.

This is European Psychology, as Byron Skyes says in The Seven Faces of Eve, most of Europe is seven mtDNA lines mixed, which has a mental, social, and psychological sameness. All out of Africa are 21 mtDNA lines, each has their own psychology due to genetic make up.

As Dr. Wolpoff the leader in Multiregional development, vs, all Out of Africa, a new species replacing the old, the Human Genome Project shows mating with the old, regional centers of evolution, and the resulting Homo Sapians being 21 sub species.

mtDNA is not the whole story, for The Neanderthal Genome Project is showing segments of their male DNA in 5-10% of Europeans.

One place Freud was right, "Biology is destiny."

Beyond the Genome, the sex, comes IQ, personality profiles, what year in the Chinese Horoscope, economics, social condition, skin color, education level, before we can ever think about wether someone is or is not living their potential.

We do have a psychology of humanity. World wide the laws are about the same, all cultures seem to hold common values, and in this overview of life thoughts do cross cultures, for true is true everywhere. One should expect a few hundred years lag time, history does move slowly.

History does show that all systems have failed, still some parts were carried forward, but humans are a work in progress. Out of the billions that have lived hundreds are notable. Many others are unknown, but we still use something they were the first to think of.

Our recent past had 99% out in the fields producing food, then a hundred years of cities and factories, now mostly gone, replaced by offices, which computers are replacing, so the question is, What is the place of humans in this changing world?

The basic question remains the same, what will the next generation do?

Our current system is dominated by Capital seeking a return on Investment, and is making bubbles that pop, with bad hangovers. Increasing Capital is not in our overall best interest.

The employment model seems doomed, we are producing more people and less jobs.

We need a psychology of human that looks to a future goal of a better world, not fitting people to this one, which ends at midnight, for all time.
