If I suck at high school, will I suck at life? My grades are what I would call "high mediocre". I don't have any friends. Is this the first agony of the rest of my life?

Did anyone here suck at high school (must have had both bad grades and a bad social life) yet excel once they escaped? If you did, give me words of reassurance and wisdom.

My father told me that he knew someone who did OK but not great in high school but excelled in college. Basically the guy knew exactly what he wanted to do, and read up on the subject in some detail over the summer months before starting college. In the meantime, the top-scoring student of my father's year failed everything in first year and dropped out.

I'm neurotypical, but I hated highschool and had few friends.

University was so much better.

Life in my 30's is great.

I remember at school, we were told, "School years are the best years of your life".

This used to depress me++

It's all a lie! School sucks! Life gets much better when you finish school.

High school sucks, there's no other way of putting it. I can't speak for anyone else but yes, my life did improve in many (not all) ways afterwards.

I had mostly bad grades, and no social life at all except people I talked to in class and stuff like that.

I hated it and am glad to be out of it. Sometimes I want badly to go back, though, and be myself, and have fun, and experience what I missed out on.

There's a list somewhere, I believe, of lots of famous people who did poorly in school. Like Einstein; before he passed, he was failing.

I had good grades, but not much of a social life. My best friend was my cat. I managed to have a pretty good life afterward.

If you need to drop out, don't be ashamed or feel pressure. Pressure and stress is not the same as motivation and responsibility and will only kill you or threaten to, or kill or threaten to kill part of you. Do not care what those people say; they don't understand and if they did they would be apologizing. Do what you want. It's actually what you need. Don't let people make you think you're a spoiled brat or need discipline or that you have to make sacrifices or all the stuff you think you need, you only want. Those people are ignorant and to be pitied.

I found my life improved dramatically after High School.

I'm sorry but high school just isn't living. It wasn't real life. You're in this sheltered environment that's not quite reality. Once I got out of high school, life finally blossomed and became more real to me. So my advice is for you to just hold your breath. It will get better. Your life will change for the better after high school. You will be able to take a deep breath.

Whoever said that school is the best years of your life was a liar, plain and simple.

Trust me, you'll feel far better off when you're out of there...

I only got decent grades in high school and I hung out with the "losers" because they were the only ones who knew what it was like to be an outcast ( variety of reasons for every person). I never went to prom. I was happy to get out. Today I'd say I am successful as a person. High school is not the world--- but it does seem so when that's all the world you've ever known. Just get through it and move on--- most people ( even the popular people) lose touch with the people they knew in high school.
I know this because I went on Myspace and searched for all the people with Myspace pages from my graduating class--- and most of them had moved out of state all over the vast country or at least to other counties far away! I'm sure they're not hanging out with each other much, if at all.

MissPickwickian, school is actually an ugly artifact of the Industrial Age that still exists in this world due to inertia. Learning is much, much more than what you do all day long in school, which is actually called forced rote memorization, an absolutely useless skill. Don't worry about not succeeding in school, many people failed in school but are successful in life. You can read more about how school is bad for you if you google for "unschooling" or fort the following authors: Grace Llewelyn, John Holt, or John Taylor Gatto. Seymour Papert and his freely downloadable ebook "Mindstorms" is also a good read about the hazards of school: http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1095592

I have the rote memory of a computer, useless or no, but I still do badly in school because my brain is like a squirrel: I dart too far ahead sometimes, but sometimes I fall behind because I get preoccupied with something (I crash in history because all I wanna do is World War Two, even though there are about 30 more centuries to cover). The squirrel does not, cannot act like an ant, learning in a slogging, timely, regular fashion. The curriculum is the only place I don't like routine.

That makes me more scared. I like school, so I'm doomed when the real world strikes me :(:(:(

Sometimes I dart far ahead in myhead and so I fall behind in the actual clas because I'm not thinking about what's being done in the class right then, but what it leads to... don't know how to explain exactly.

High school was a complete waste of time for me, and I absolutely hated it. I had already learned college level calculus, english/grammar, sciences and whatnot before I even entered high school, and the only thing I ever learned was how to hide my differences from the rest of the world. I never learned how to be very functional, or even remote social skills (Isn't that what Social Studies are for?), and would have been one of the five valedictorians if not for a teacher that had it out for me and screwed me out of a final exam. In most cases, final exams couldn't be made up later, and the fact that I had LOST MY SIGHT should have been an exception, but not for this nasty old lady. And this was a private "Christian" school.

If all that wasn't enough, there was no "guidance counselor" or even an adviser for college applications and whatnot.

I had one friend throughout my time there, and the only reason we were friends is because we had the same first name and our birthdays were a day apart. Beyond that there was nothing in common.

Oh, and we didn't have a prom...We had a "Junior/Senior Banquet" organized by the junior class. I was the only person in the school's history to be uninvited.
