I have worn the underside of my tongue raw from constantly flicking my tongue stud repetitively from side to side.

Sounds painful... I used to pick at spots and psoriasis patches on my arms and make them bleed. A way I distracted myself from this was to get some clear nail varnish (or a pink one to match my natural colour) and whenever I felt myself going for my arms, I scratched at the nail varnish instead. THAT is why you must pick a clear or similar colour because I did it with black once and it looked awful! If you try it, tell me how it goes!

Get rid of the tongue stud!! !! ! (DUH!)

Substitute a bracelet or ring you can fiddle with instead. It'll look a lot more "normal"

If you take the stud out, you can still flick your tongue around. If you get a different accessory to flick (necklace or something), you may not have to remove the stud.

well, you are just asking for a tongue infection, so if you can stop the habit, best to remove the stud and let everything heal. If you keep at it, and do get a infection, you could lose your tongue. If a tongue infection was to get bad enough, there is the possibility of surgically remove part or all of it, this is called a "glossectomy". If you had to have your tongue removed, you would have limited speech, and most likely have to feed yourself with a feeding tube!
I am not saying this to scare you, just that the fact is that infections from tongue piercings are very common, and I just wouldnt chance it and remove the thing if your having problems with it.

A tongue piercing might look cool now, but it wont look so great with drool running down your face all the time because you had to have surgery and now cant swollow your own spit :?

Tap your fingers.

But the quietest and easiest way to to it is tap your first few fingers on your thumb.

OUCH! how 'bout learning to whistle tunes while inhaling and exhaling- thataways, you can carry a tune as you breathe, 'till the cows come home. just a random thought. that's what i do.
or, here is a more constructive thing that will help maintain oral hygiene, just remove the stud and use your tongue-flicking to compulsively swab and clean your dental surfaces.

happy hygiene!

Thanks for suggestions everyone :) I've mostly managed to force myself to stop the habit, and substituted tapping my fingers or fidgeting with my nails...

I had worse ones before, lol. I used to repetitively squeeze my metacarpal bones, did that while overexcited and squeezed them so hard I swear I almost fractured one.
