I think some people don't care if the child lacks confidence. They just find amusement in openly stating their opinion.

i think they think the child is too confident and are trying to vent their frustration, because they themselves are envious. some people arent very nice and dont want others to have what they themselves cant. thankfully this should make no difference whatsoever to the child:)
