I've noticed on a lot of websites that people who join in a group have a tendency to place signatures, or " Sig's " :?: as the vernacular of today's society says. I've a question about it, what exactly are they? and is there any reason behind it? if so, should I've one as well?

I don't understand what you mean by "join in a group"; do you mean "join a forum"? :?:

Anyway, signatures are what they look like: a short piece of text appended to your posts where a signature might go if you were writing. People usually choose something they like or something which reflects their mood. You can get a (rough!) idea of someone's character from what they choose as signatures and avatars.

Mine are usually musical. At the moment it's the opening lines from the Queen of the Night aria, which is an astonishing song.

I guess it's just a thing you like and it appears in every post you make. It can say something about you. Sometimes they are fun or funny.

I always use cryptic lyrics to hint at how I feel.

Do you find all text pretentious?

A sig can be pretentious, that's true. Mine may or may not be.

Your current sig isn't cryptic at all.

Think of it as a textual avatar.

Sigs can even be pictures. On another forum I frequent, a lot of people have graphics sigs.

Moi?

I think people do it because it reminds them of something important,
for me it means to choose my words carefully before speaking out

Eh not really, but it does have a deeper meaning than what you probably perceive. I do at times just put on a more aggressive front, which is probably 2/3s of the actual motivation. The question is why I used "Desecrate Through Reverence" that rather than something like "I'm The One" or "The Only" by Static-X.

Other times I have used things like:
Does your conscience bother you?
Come as you are as you were as I want you to be
Revolution is my name
Vows are spoken to be broken
Virtue or vice? Will you pay the price?
I have no right to win I'm just caught up in all the battles
Go away from all the pain that made you half as good as god
Sink. Suffer. Self Destruct. Rise stronger. Reconstruct.
Each dawn another curse every breath a twisting blade
Privileged a chosen few blessed with our time in hell

I think it's like avatars: it's just for fun.

humm, i dont really know why lol. you have forums discussing defined topics, and yet theyre just littered with these things. the same everytime you read a post by that person- as though its so important that theyve took it upon themselves to decide you should have it drilled into you. i find something about them abit egotistical and conceited

buuut, its no biggie:)

Depends on the sig I guess, some really are lame and egotistical. Some not.
