I cried when Stephen Gately died. I sort of had known him all my life in a weird, detatched sort of way. I didn't know him personally but me and my friend had a very special bond caused by Boyzone and to find out one of them had passed away was like losing part of the bond. I know that sounds kind of stupid... and probably is, but also Stephen Gately was my first childhood crush
I remember when he came out in public and all I thought, as a sweet child, was 'why do people hate him now?' Mum had to explain to me that some people were very cruel and didn't like gay people. I had never come across this before so it was really confusing to me. Me and my friend made a 'radio show' (cute!) where we both defended Stephen like he was our family or something.
I understand what you are saying though. It's like for me, when Princess Diana died. I was about 8 or 9 at the time and I couldn't understand why so many people were crying about an image on the TV... I didn't put two and two together and realise that she was a real person! I remember having a temper tantrum in fact because Sky 1 cancelled Pokémon...
