How the hell are nearly 15,000 people online? Just over 1,100 members and over 13,700 visitors?

Something isn't right, I'm thinking...

People view pages far more often than they post anything. Lots of people lurk without registering as members. Also ... "bots" ... all the different search engines checking out pages to include in their index of the web.

Further, it depends on the time period that "now" covers - it could be the last 30 seconds, the last 30 minutes, the whole of today, whatever.

So it could mean something like "15,193 different users, including search engines, accessed some page or other content on the website in the last however many minutes".

There are even some people trying to hack their way into websites too. But registered users, lurkers, search engines, and a few hacking attempts ... they all add up.

Alex has done well, in my opinion.

I've just noticed that. That's an awful lot of people to be looking at our posts.

Yeah... it's kinda odd because it's usually only normal for there to be less than 1200. The other day WP was having some problems and I couldn't load any WP pages and my internet wasn't messed up. I kept getting the WP "Too many people are posting so watch this page" (And then eventually the page wouldn't load anything)... and after awhile (maybe like an hour) it was back on. I'm guessing it's either an error or maybe the site was updated to support wayyy more people :?

Anyway though, I agree with the post above that Alex does a great job :)... so if it is an error I don't really care since this site is so awezome anyway :P

8O I hope that's an error because it's kind of terrifying.

Right now it is just over 16,000. At the bottom of that box (on down the page) it reads:

People Online:
Visitors: 14974
Members: 1148
New Today: 60
New Yesterday: 33

I think that the 1148 Members online is what we used to see in the Online Now at the top.

Just over 17,000 now.

I remember when it just hit 1,000... and that was just a couple of months ago.

I knew all of this, which is why I began the topic in the first place. It's just so... sudden. And eery.

Now we have 16785 visitors. I wonder if there was a talk show that WP was featured on?

If the number is growing like that, then maybe the server is not deleting session files - and the counter is counting session files. Or something like that.

So yes, it does look like a glitch in the counter. Hint: if it keeps growing and never declines, suspect a bug.

If this goes on, the "Online Now" value will soon exceed the "Members" value and that would definitely be weird.

I think one-A-N is right and the counter "forgets" to substract members who go offline again. I reached a similar conclusion/suspicion even before I read that post.

37,735 -- Currently online at the moment.

This CAN'T be possible? But how? Could it be actually humans? Could it be a cheat? Could it be google bots?
Who knows, maybe one person does and his name is Alex Plank. ;)
