Why are some people referred to as to those who in spite of their being adult, don't have a life and live in their parents' basement? Why in a basement? Can't those people just live in their old bedroom where they lived as kids and teens when they come back to their parents to live with them after an unsuccessful attempt of living on their own? Can anyone explain it to me?
Well, mysterious stranger, I think it is just another toxic meme that has been embedded into our minds from television. If you do not fly from the nest when you are 18 years of age, you are somehow immature and a social failure; doomed to contemptuous perception of self.
The basement is an anthropomorphism of this false idea of being a failure. It's dark, damp, musty, underground; a deserving dungeon where the social pariah may remain out of sight, isolated from family and friends, so they may wallow in their shame, damned and derided from experiencing acceptance by their piers until they learn to integrate properly with "society."
