What do you believe to be the greatest unsolved murder in history? This can include not only a single victim with an unknown murderer, but also a serial or mass killer that was never caught.

Jonbenet Ramsey is a definite candidate for this. And the Phantom Killer of Texarkana, Arkansas in 1946 is also a likely candidate. But neither of these would be my number one choice, but they are high up on my list.

I would like to hear from some of you first, and then I will state my number one choice.

Jimmy Hoffa comes to mind.

Unsolved murders that come to mind:

- The black dahlia murder
- The Jack the Ripper murders
- The Zodiac Killer murders
- The assassination of JFK (as there is speculation that there were more than one shooter)

I think I watch too much crime and investigation network.

For me it's unsolved disappearances which are a much more interesting topic. I prefer reading about serial killers, not murders per se. The most interesting case of someone missing at this moment is the one of my compatriot - Iwona Wieczorek. Her disappearance caused a national hysteria, for several weeks all the media in here were talking about her.

"X" marks the spot of the resting place for a murder victim in one of the most mysterious murders of all time. This is the scene as it appears today. The road was narrower then, and there were trees and brush where the victim was found.

I am interested if anyone can recognize this scene and crime. It is considered by many experts as one of the most baffling murder mysteries in all of history. So baffling and disturbing is it that some detectives have devoted most of their lives in trying to solve it. Today we are no closer to the truth.

This may not be considered one of the greatest unsolved murders of all time but it's just as disturbing if not more so because it involves the Moore Family, a father, mother, their four children and the Stillinger Girls, two young girls who came over to spend the night. Their murders are known as the Villisca Ax Murders of June 10th, 1912 Villisca, Iowa. They never found the killer and what is strange is that the house was all locked up from the inside so they never found out how the killer left the house. My pick for the most mysterious murder in history happened around February 25, 1957, and the victim was found in Fox Chase, Pennsylvania on the street I showed a picture of in a previous post on this thread. The victim was a 4-6 year old boy that was found stuffed in a cardboard box beside the road.

Why is this most mysterious in my opinion? The murderer's identity is not known. And no one seems to have any information about the murderer's identity. The identity of the murdered boy is not known. In fact, no one seems to know anything about the murder except that a deceased boy was found in the cardboard box beside the road.

I caution anyone about researching "The Boy in the Box" because of the graphic depictions of this case. The only photographs known of the victim are after death, and some of these photographs were widely distributed in hopes of finding his identity. To this day he is simply called "America's Unknown Child." This case deeply bothers me. I find it so tragic that a little boy, who showed signs of abuse while living, should have suffered such a fate---and then to die with his identity unknown. After death he was stuffed in a throw away box and tossed in refuge alongside a road to be forgotten. Had he not been found, there's no telling how long it would have taken for him to be discovered. He was originally buried in a potter's field alongside criminals. But recently he has been moved to a city cemetery and had DNA samples taken to try to determine his identity. Today, nothing new seems to be known about him. People regularly place toys on his monument---toys that he probably never had the luxury of playing with during the short time he was alive. Some plausible theories suggest he may have had some "mental" condition. In looking at one of the distributed death photographs, he appears to have a moebius mouth shape. I have a theory that he may have been autistic since many autistic babies are born with a moebius mouth shape.

I invite debate on this case because at this point, debate is about all we have to go on with this tragic case. I pray that some day we may know the truth behind this case---without doubt one of the most baffling in history.

It's a VERY mysterious case - she came out of the disco located in this evil looking house http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krzywy_Domek after a quarrel with her friends and decided on a lonely walk to her home throughout a park; a secluded and quite dangerous place. And she hasn't been seen ever since.

There were many suspitions as for the identity of her putative kidnaper (because if she wasn't kidnapped then what else could happen to her?) - the last one was that some young man raped and kidnapped her together with his buddies and afterwards committed a suicide for he had terrible pricks of conscience. But it turned out this man wasn't even present at her city at this time. It was believed at the beginning that a towel found close to the place where she had been seen for the last time, belonged to the man recorded by the cameras who was walking right behind her and who could be the putative murderer or rapist. He was carrying a similar towel. The one which was found was with the Bogatynia city logo on and while some time later this city was facing a VERY bad flood, my very first thought was that Iwona's ghost was taking revenge on the city for the murderer, lol. It had sperm on but it had nothing to do with Iwona. Her case remains unsolved but I suspect it will end like the one of Joanna Surowiecka - a very pretty girl who was killed 5 years ago and her body was found last fall - her murderer used her mobile and it was in what way he was found. She was thought by her parents that someone had taken her to a German brothel. Or Ewelina Skwara - another girl in her early teens who was killed in December by a man who observed her for like half a year before. She died 2 days after her 14th birthday and was buried in one grave with her twin sister who died in turn at the age of 2 days, 14 years before this tragedy.

And everyone thinks I'm weird for trying to find a correlation between serial killer methodology and geography! Nice to find somewhere where it seems normal and not an indication of homicidal tendencies .

I'd go for The Green River Killer, Jack The Stripper, Zodiac or The Black Dahlia, except people are pretty sure they knew who did those murders, they just can't prove it.

Jack The Ripper has to be the ultimate unsolvable one, surely?

Hi Arian---yes, Jack the Ripper is often considered the #1 on greatest murder mysteries. I enjoyed your post---I think a lot of our interest in serial killers/unsolved murders/mysterious crimes lies in our Asperger's thinking---analyzing and looking for small details in order to solve complex problems. Many of these crimes offer plenty to analyze and definite challenges. With Jack the Ripper, we know of the victims, but it is the identity of the killer that is the mystery. We may find great interest in analyzing clues to his identity and carefully scrutinizing possible suspects to look for patterns, etc. Some of us may find great fascination with the codes left by the Zodiac Killer. I think we would make great detectives for cold case files. Often times the greater the challenge, the greater our interest. That is why I chose the Boy in the Box mystery---not only is the killer unknown, the identity of the murdered boy is also unknown. This is like finding a missing needle in a haystack.
