I recently had a “eureka moment” and I think my idea/invention could be worth a bit of money.

The problem is, I’m at a loss as to what I need to do to protect my intellectual property…

Surely, among our bright community there must be someone with experience inventing/patenting/developing products.

Any advice or insights into the process of protecting and developing an invention would be greatly appreciated.

write a detailed description and mail it to yourself. the post mark acts as a leagl identification. Never open the letter unless in a court of law.

Wow, that's a clever idea. You should patent that!

Hmm... I guess I could even include a dvd with a video of the prototype too...

That brings up another question.

My prototype will include a ready made product used in a novel way. Will this complicate the process?

I really hate to reinvent the wheel on the way to my invention, but I could make it completely from scratch if needs be...

first you need an idea patent(it's called something else) it's cheap and locks your idea for one year.you still need to apply for the patent, but the patent takes longer and the idea patent locks you in....know a good lawyer?
if your interested in it a $20.00 book would be a good investment
