Do you believe in their existence? What do you think of it? I'm reacently reading of Svali and her experiences with the Illuminati but I don't trust this woman at all - even if we assume she doesn't make up all of this deliberately, she is a sad case of false memories put into her head

Yes, my Dad sold them their business cards and stationary years ago. We got to go to their summer barbeque. Great fun but they wear funny hats.

But Freemasons aren't the Illuminati, that's not the same.

Yes many secret organisations exist. Its just whether they do any harm or are just puny people.

I'd say it was a safe bet that some people, somewhere call themselves the Illuminati.

They did exist.
They were a society formed in the 1700's for the purpose of bringing the ideals of the Enlightenment ( equality, democracy, freedom of religion, that sort of thing) into Bavaria.

The Freemasons evolved from being a trade guild for actual stone cutters into a British gentleman's club about the same time.

Both organizations were secretive so both became convenient scapegoats.

I doubt any organization of the name "illuminati" has actually existed for a long time which is all of the more reason to use them as a scapegoat.

The real evil conspirators are "the Sons of the Desert"!

What about skull and bones at Yale. Both Bush and Kerry were in that society. Many of the top male US money makers were in skull and bones.

They were an old time secret society, like the Masons. Didn't last very long. The usual heirarchical nonsense I think. There were a lot of rich and powerful men around back then who liked to think of themselves as being wonderfully progressive and radical, while actually being patriarchal closed-minded misogynist stuck-up elitist twats. If you've ever seen The Magic Flute or read up on the Founding Fathers you'll know the sort. Anyhoo, the name stuck around and became a favourite with people who talk about that sort of thing. It's great material for books and films and video games. The Illuminatus! Trilogy, which is something of a parody of the whole thing, is responsible for a lot of it as it's been very popular in geeky circles for a long time.

They're usually portrayed as wanting to take over the world (or already ruling it from behind the scenes), often with a technological slant. As usual with conspiracy theories, the practicalities and utility of this are rarely considered.

popular shorthand for a network of interlinked secret societies that stretches back to the classical period, if not much further.Often 13 indentifiable bloodlines are identified as being at the core. These are the ancient dynasties controlled ancient rome, the british empire etc. When an empire collapses and its colonies appear to be granted independance, the people who rise to power are installed via this network working behind the scenes, thus the control network has spread throughout the world. Many events are 'staged' whilst the illuminati controlled media creates a 'movie' version that the public will accept as fact. For example both sides of WW2 are alleged to have been bank-rolled through the same financial organisation. 9-11 is the best known modern example.
