It's learning how to survive away from civilization (no I'm serious), what do you think?

Cool, I like that because one of my obsessions is pre-Columbus Native Indians (who, of course, used to survive off the land, as you are proposing to do).

That's a great special interest. :)

Great. I've had the same basic interest most of my life, though at different times it has expressed itself differently, as voluntary simplicity, frugality, homesteading, boondocking, and now emergency preparedness.

It would be very tough. I think in a way we are very spoiled. We have so much convenience.

My younger brother has some AS traits, and he was really into survivalism for years. He still is to a smaller degree.

That would be a useful set of skills to know, especially with a high rate of unemployment making it an employers market and thereby making almost anyone's ability to provide for themselves financially uncertain. Also, aside from mere survival...

Not seriously though, actual piracy is quite horrible, taking away from people who are attempting to earn a living. Surviving via gathering (and perhaps growing) one's own food is far better than merely stealing, although since all the land is owned by one group or another the definition of stealing is skewed thereby to include subsisting off of the land unfortunately.

That's a cool interest. Ever watch Survivorman? He goes into very unaccommodating environments and lives off whatever sustenance and shelter he can improvise, just to prove it can be done.

Good idea - the zombies are coming!

But seriously, me too - it's a very interesting philosophical exercise to find out just what you actually need in life - Henry Thoreau wrote Walden on the subject, one of my favorite books.

The difference between life and death is: 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food.

Most of the rest is optional...

I went through a phase of learning survival skills. How to make things, grow things, identify plants and make water drinkable, stuff like that. Hopefully a lot stuck. I was kinda thinking the world would have gone to pot a lot worse by now. Still, it will all serve me well should I become homeless or something.

The whole survivalist thing is intriguing to me. It gives me a feeling of independence.
