Wondering if my fellow aspies feel the same way. I have quite a few trips to the dentist in the next few days, and it's starting to get on my nerves.

Terrified to the point that I quit going about 5 yrs ago. I have two cracked teeth on top from when I used to constantly clench my jaw when I was anxious or stressed. The dental assistants kept putting that damn pick right into those cracked teeth and I would just about hit the ceiling. I actually got mad at them several times and it just kept happening - so I quit going. All of my teeth are sensitive and I have to use Sensodyne toothpaste. Now I have one filling that I believe might be coming out and I still do not want to go to the dentist. I have the best dental insurance so it isn't that. I also grew up in a home where my Pa never went to the dentist and did just fine by flossing and brushing daily and using Listerine which is what I do too. Also my dentist died (from dabbling in some holistic stuff that shut his kidneys down) so I never found another dentist after that.

I avoid dentists like the plague! I have always hated going to the dentist. I have a horrible gag reflex and the sounds and smells of the tools they use make me feel sick and agitated.

Plus, as an adult I've learned how dishonest they can be. I read an article recently about a man who conducted an experiment involving dentists all over the US. After a check-up with his actual dentist (of several decades), he went uncover around the country to many different dental practices, saying that he was new in town and hadn't had a check-up in a few years. Most of the dentists he saw tried to tell him he had cavities and other costly problems that he didn't actually have, with costs ranging from a few thousand to tens-of thousands of dollars.

At the dental practice my boyfriend goes to, the first dentist he saw there said he had 7 cavities that needed to be filled. When she was replaced by another dentist, he said there weren't any cavities... 8O

Not as scared as I am nervous. TBH, I am not looking forward to the same "you need to floss more" lecture. I have been flossing often, reason being that I have more frequent tartar build-up than most people, hence the lecture. But I still go to keep my teeth clean and healthy.

ahh, this is beautiful!! the votes all line up perfectly, each one has one less than the one above it..

on topic though, up until a couple years ago i was terrified of going to the dentist or doctor and absolutely refused to go. when i was 13 was when i had my first dentist appointment. now i'm just slightly nervous that i'll end up having a cavity or something.

I'm not scared, probably because my mother's a dental nurse!

It depends on the dentist.

No, because I am luck enough to have pretty tough teeth. Not white and shiny and stuff. Just tough.
