Last night I went fishing with my family, which is something I don't do too often because I find fishing to be boring and rarely catch anything. Well the strangest thing happened while I was fishing, I felt something pull on my line really hard and reeled it up thinking I caught a huge fish, and it was actually a large sized blue crab! I somehow managed to get it on shore without it falling back into the ocean and we put it in the icebox. My Mom was talking about looking up different recipes for cooking crab meat so we can make something out of it along with the other fish we caught.

I wish I had a camera so I could take a picture of it to show everybody, but I swear it's bigger than my hand! Usually the few times we've caught crabs while fishing with poles they were always too tiny to eat.

This was really cool and helped cure my case of crabbiness.

That's cool!

I used to see an Asian guy catch lobster on rod/reel before, but it usually doesn't happen by accident.

My most interesting catch was a rather large octopus (released of course)...

This crab was caught by accident, but my family told me how hard it is to pull a crab that size to shore with a fishing pole so apparantly I did something really cool that not too many people are able to do. I know it did pull on my line really hard while I was reeling it in and I was afraid the line would snap or the pole would fall out of my hands into the water. We currently have the crab in our deep freezer with the other fish we caught (two catfish: one normal and one sailing, and a yellow jack), and my Mom was talking about maybe making a crab cake with it, but since it's one crab we'll have to split it.

That's cool that you caught an octopus, my Mom caught a squid one time and it was cool because it was transparent. :)

I also caught half a skipjack tuna once, thanks to an opportunistic shark...

I wonder if Walmart could sell that kind of fish in their sea-food aisle for half-priced? :P

that's cool you caught a crab!
and that half a tuna - did you keep it anyway? I remember my dad telling me sharks sometimes follow along waiting for a fishing vessel to catch tasty morsels and then snatch them. He tried to reel one in and it came up to the boat, and then just left before they could gaff it.

Did not keep it, were catching them for (billfish) bait - they're no good for eating and no good for bait if they're half eaten already...

Yeah after awhile of pulling I started to think mine was stuck on something too, but the tip of the pole kept bending down so I knew it had to be something grabbing it. I thought I had caught a big fish but ended up catching something cooler (the crab).

Also I hear blue crab is the best tasting crab meat. I guess I will find out for myself eventually. 8)
