It's quite random, I know, but I want to see the biggest tarantula it is possible to create in a lab through selective breeding.

Yes, I know they can't be much bigger than they already are, due to their pneumatic leg systems, but there is still some room for healthy growth, I'm sure. I mean, look how strong and fast this one is, at 11-inches in legspan!

I am opposed to this. Spiders are terrifying enough, the last thing they need is augmented volume.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to crawl under a blanket and think of puppies.

Ah, but in the case of spiders, the bigger you breed a species, the slower and thus the easier to catch, or run from, it becomes. So it's not like a horribly dangerous experiment that escapes from a lab and terrorizes a town. Rather, in this particular case, the greater the size, the more effectively docile the animal is. It's not like the feared "super snake" accidental hybrid that really could terrorize a town.

A spider extends its limbs using fluid pressure, and the relative strengths of the bodily structures should decrease as the size of the body increases. The amount of pressure required to extend the enlarged limb would also be increased, which would aggravate the problem of the strength of the tissues. There would be a size limit, and the limit would definitely be under the size of the car. Spiders at their current scales are already good designs, and increasing their sizes would not help them because it would increase the food intake required for maintenance.
