The sound of a train at night

Now, I don't have an interest in actual trains, but I grew up near a railroad track and as an adult lived near a track for years and years. There isn't a track in this town and I dearly miss the sound of a train whistle in the night. I also like hearing the train itself, faintly in the distance on the tracks.

Sounds and smells are big things for me. I also like the sound of a thunderstorm or hard rain at night. I have some CD's I've burned of thunderstorms, but I can't find one of intermittant train whistles and trains going by. I'd like to find one with that occasionally there and then mainly cicada's singing. We called the locusts when I was growing up.

Well, there used to be a train, and there is still a track, over by the grain elevator but that's shut down now and the track is no longer used. I really miss the sound of them.

I rode on a train before, and didn't much care for it. It's better than flying though. You have a much better chance of walking away from a train wreck than a plane crash.

Anybody know of a CD with the occasional train sound mixed in with normal night sounds like cicadas and the occasional dog barking? Of course to mimic the night sounds when I was a child you would also need a siren every now and then and some gunshots, but I can do without that.

I also have memories of hearing trains late at night and I miss that sound. That sound used to come between 11PM and 1AM. I found that sound very relaxing. I'm going to keep my ears open as I sleep to see if I could still hear that sound. I used to be worried if I didn't hear a train in the distance around that time. I'd also like to find a CD like that. Thank you for the memories.

I hear them. They aren't all that far from my house. I have friends who live behind one (and I live about 3-5 min. away from them) and I wouldn't find that soothing; I know I didn't when I spent the night there a couple of times. I guess they've gotten used to it.
From my house, however, it's more of a distant sound (though it sounds closer in the winter months like now.) I like this sound. It occurs several times throughout the night; it's just after midnight as I'm typing this and I don't believe I've heard it yet... Maybe in the early morning hours. I can't remember.
Then sometimes in the daytime, of course.

I also like the sound of a distant thunder in the evening.
I hate the thunder that shakes your room and wakes you up, though. =.=

It's great to hear that. We lived about five blocks from the train tracks and also about a mile from the fairgrounds and BIR (Birmingham International Raceway) when I was little. The trains came by all during the day and night and I don't remember hearing them during the day, but I remember being stopped by them and having to wait and I always counted the cars. Freight trains, not Amtrack trains.

A train whistle in the hot, sticky summer night with the windows open is just the best sound ever. And of course the cicadas. They sing here in the summer up until about 11 or 12 at night. Do you all have them where you live? If you haven't heard them they are a buzzzzbuzzzBUZZZBUZZZbuzzzbuzz sound then when they finish in one tree, another group starts up. It's very soothing.

I would also hear the stock cars at the races. We were far enough away that it was soft and distant but I remember falling asleep many a time to the sound of the cars.

The fair always had fireworks at closing time and they were there in March and October for ten days. We were close enough to not only hear them, but I could get up if I was still awake and watch them in the sky from my bedroom window.

We were close to a train track also at the place we lived for years before we sold that house and moved out here. I loved hearing it especially in the winter. I like to have the house cold to sleep and I was all cuddled down under the quilts between my husband and whichever child happened to be sleeping in our bed also at the time. It was a really nice sound and comforting in the cold night and made me feel all cozy.

I have Frostwire - the new Limewire which was the new Napster after Metallica ruined it, so I'm going to see what I might can find on that to download.

I grew up hearing them, and the actual train going by, so that may be the difference. It was always there. Our house was also under an approach to the airport so I'd hear a lot of planes. I never hear planes here. That was a nice sound too.

I even like that loud thunderclap that shakes things, as long as there is nice hard rain with it. I dislike tornados though and the tornado sirens. The sirens scare me more than the tornados do. They are the air raid sirens and they blow them whenever there is a tornado warning. They sound exactly like the air raid sirens in movies. Really scary and apocolyptic sounding.

No, because I want a CD of it so I can hear it in bed falling asleep. The computer is in the livingroom. I'm sure somebody, somewhere made one. If not, I bet it would sell if somebody recorded it.

The train runs through the valley down the hill from my house. One of my favorite things is listening to the train late at night as the sound carries throughout our neighborhood. I keep thinking of recording it some night, but haven't gotten around to it (3am would be a good time with little ambient noise in the air).

I know they sell CD's of train sounds, but they're not soothing. They're sounds of particular locomotives crashing by and whistling at crossings (for the most dedicated rail-fan's/foamers).

Yes, but if you find anything there you like, you could use a video-to-mp3 converter and burn it to a CD.

That went completely over my head. I'm not good at computers lol. I'd have to get the kids to do that for me.

I can relate as I love the sounds of a the trains at night, growing up in Oklahoma, as well as the sounds of Coyotes

I love the sound of the train too.

LOVE that sound late at night. It always makes me smile and feel good for some reason.
