I have been wondering this for a while, but I thought I might just throw it out here to see if anyone else has it. When I first turned old enough drink I would say that I was kind of looking forward to the idea of drinking socially, but whenever I tried different drinks I always picked up a common taste that I could not stand. My Brother who can drink doesn't understand, he claimed that there was no real common taste, but I definetly can.
If memory serves the taste kind of reminded me when bread starts to go moldy. Its a taste and smell that it is just impossible to think that I would not be able to fit into the social aspect. It kind of annoys me as a lot of people here in Australia seem to think it is Australian to drink socialy, and I feel excluded, I probably look like a wimp that I only drink soft drink.

The common taste is the alcohol. There are people who don't like that taste. Most people DONT like that alcohol taste when they first start drinking. I didn't. Not one bit. But, I was drinking with friends and I wanted to do what they did, so I kept drinking and then I got a buzz and found out why that taste really doesn't matter that much.
Nobody drinks straight alcohol for the taste. If they did, there would be ice cream and gum that tastes like vodka. There isn't any for a reason. Because it's nasty. Straight alcohol is, anyway. Except for really old scotch thats sooooo smooooooth. And I don't even like scotch, but I do love Glenmorongie, the 18 year old kind. The 22 yo is even better. But I digress.
When you first start drinking and you get that buzz, as long as you don't drink enough to throw up and just stick with that first buzz, you associate that taste with the buzz. The next time you drink, you will taste that taste and you'll know you are going to get that buzz soon and you will look forward to it. That's perfectly ok as long as you don't do it all the time. It's relaxing in the right quantities and it makes you more outgoing and chill. After about five times of drinking and getting a nice little buzz (I'd suggest three or four oz of alcohol per drinking session and no more - thats of alcohol, one oz alcohol per mixed drink or one oz shots, or one beer or glass of wine) the taste won't bother you anymore. That aftertaste won't ever be GOOD, but it will be worth it and you won't notice it anymore. You will associate that taste with drinking.
I could suggest a few drinks for you that don't taste very alcoholy. Goldschlager doesn't have a very bad alcohol taste. It's a very strong cinnamon taste. It's a schnaaps. You don't mix it, you drink it in shots. Always wait at least 30 minutes between shots. There is also a drink called a "Slow Comfortable Screw up Against the Wall". This is how you make that. It's very strong though and counts as three drinks. So only have two. Drink it slowly too. It's one shot sloe gin, one shot Southern Comfort or any bourbon, fill the rest of the glass up with orange juice and put a shot of galliano in that. Use a glass the size that milk is normally served in. Not too big, but not too little. I can't taste the booze in that drink.
Or, you could just choose to not drink at all. There is nothing wrong with that. If you go to a party where people are drinking, just have a coke. Nobody will know it doesn't have rum or bourbon in it. If they are serving only beer, grab one and open it and hold it. Take a sip now and then, but don't drink it much if you don't like it.
Don't force yourself to try and like something that you don't just to fit in. But if you do want to try to like it just because of your own reasons, then try the advice above.
Bottoms up!
