Is anyone else here actually PROUD of being...
...socially isolated?
The older I get the more I'm starting to see the benefits of being that lonely aspie guy with no friends. I mean I like getting to know new people and I like friends but most of the people I see around my area and on the net are just really not my thing. I'm starting to think that all I'm being surrounded with lately are idiots. I know it is a narcissistic and misanthropic thing to say but somehow I actually feel glad that I'm missing out on a lot of things, I'm actually GLAD to be a loner sometimes. Whenever I read the news, there is tragedy here, accidents there, strikes here, street riots there, murders here, pedophilia there... I think public life is actually so dangerous and irritating right now, it's almost pointless getting in there, the only place I actually feel happy, is at home, away from all these people, that fight with each other, complain about each other, talk s**t about each other. There are just too many people on this planet and most of them act like the freaking sun shines out of their leaky bottoms, I really want to avoid people these days, they all disappoint me in one way or another, all they do is brag about all these silly mainstream things that I really don't give a tiny s**t about. Everyone is different in every possible way yet they're all the f*****g same, all one way. I think privacy is a good thing, loneliness is a good thing too if you just don't get TOO lonely. I think most people being lonely and wanting friends on here should think about all the NEGATIVE things you experience when you socialize and get out, I mean it's better being unknown than being wanted dead or publicly stoned for one reason. Sometimes you can have 1000 friends and being away from home all the time but still feel lonely as hell and feel like no-one in the world actually gives a tiny crap about you. Like when you have spent years socializing and meeting new people and actually find out that none of these 10000 people you've met can actually stand you or care about you?
Liking solitude and your own company is one thing. Why not enjoy the life you have, right?
But your post seems to more be about leveling. Leveling is a rationalization where we say to ourselves, "we are not so bad because they are worse." Then you go on to cite loads of examples of stories from the new media about human beings as a further justification.
I used to work in media. I can tell you this---BAD news sells. It gets, views, hits, views and listeners. Loads of happy warm human interest stories are slammed in ratings against negative, offensive, tragic and horrifying stories. So gauging the human condition by news stories is an inaccurate measuring tool, at best.
Real people are complex. Meaning there are good people who do bad things and bad people who do good things. Almost everyone has many layers, and it takes a while to really know another person. There are many people worth befriending.
Most human relations require time to build and and require upkeep. Whether that is worth your time is a personal preference. However, I do not think it reflects the quality of humanity, generally.

Well so far I was taking the news thing as an example, but there are a zillions of things that happened to me in real life that sadly enough made me make this thread. I just want to point out that it is silly to keep thinking about yourself that you are inferior towards other people, even when you have aspergers. The only person that you damage with that is yourself.
Sometimes if I can sum up life using only one image, I use this:
Yeah, people are hurtful sometimes. Including family members hurt us, but love us, too. It is hard to be a person, actually.
Don't misunderstand, I love to isolate. I must force myself to return phone calls or emails or texts. The hardest distance to walk is out my front hallway to the door. It took some time meet worthy people, but it is good to be around trustworthy, patient friends sometimes. However, to make those friends and keep those friendships I am required to go against my isolationist nature and return the phone call, meet for coffee, whatever.
The rule about bad news applies to our personal narratives also. If I replay every harm and insensitve insult over and over, it multiplies my fears of people. (Believe me I can easily focus on the one negative comment to the exclusion of a dozen neutral or positive comments) Just as I can choose my focus, and I can choose who I spend time with. Since it is taxing for me to meet people, I try to be economical and meet with people that I feel good after meeting.
Yes I can relate to wanting to isolate to reflect and re-energerize. Life is really too short to spend time with people who make a person feel bad about him or herself. As a kid and an adult I have moved around every few years and I have good memories of friends who made me feel good about myself. The so called friends who made me feel bad about myself were not really worth my time and looking back I feel that I gave the so called friends a chance and when they did not meet my expectations I just simply moved on to greener pastures or aka positive friendships:)

Not really
I don't know how it happens but I run into some really great people in my avoidance of most
Becoming friends with them can lead to hurt, yes, but I've learned that with an open mind, they can teach so many amazing things a book, the internet, a lecture, or even a personal experience cannot teach.
Each of the very few friends I've made have been a mentor to me in some way. Some have had far more impact than others in what I've learned from them.
I'm just saying, if I locked myself away from the world for the next 25 years, the only knowledge I'd have by age 50 would be how I interpret the world, and not how others do... and the world is more beautiful when you can see it through more than one set of eyes ![]()
