I stumbled upon an interesting blog (and no, it's not mine).

The author claims that the majority of people on earth, regardless of beliefs or intelligence, have an extrasensory ability to allow them to communicate their emotions better with one another. Apparently, people don't become fully aware of this ethereal structure until their adolescence, when it's explained to them by adults.

The rule is that no one must talk about it openly, as it will stunt the development of children in accessing this paranormal ability. For some reason, a minority of the human population just never develops this ability, and they're kept in the dark since the majority can't speak of it openly. The minority often feel out of step and baffled by everyone else, never knowing why.

The author claims he broke the rule by telling his best friend about it. The best friend was not connected to this network, and didn't understand why he was so different from everyone else. When the author told his friend the truth, the friend had a breakdown, and the author was punished by being severed from this link.

While it's probably BS, it makes for a good read in terms of folk sci-fi/fantasy. And I think in someways many here can relate to it, if you feel out of step with others.
