I know a lot of us have favorite plush companions who help us feel safe, secure and loved, but what about those friends of ours who aren't necessarily cuddly and plush but help us get thru the day nonetheless?
For example, here are four of mine:
Some of you may recognize Miss Important, the little Fisher Cat Calico Critter, and my die cast of Susie the Coupe, but standing next to them are Judith the Wild Thing (from Spike Jonze's film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, one of my favorite movies) and Ingrid. Ingrid, you see, is a plastic doll of the screaming woman in Edward Munch's painting, "The Scream." I found Ingrid as a keychain (her chain is long gone) in a museum gift shop when I was a little girl. I really have no idea where I got the name "Ingrid," from, but she and the woman in Munch's painting have always been "Ingrid" to me. In fact, I believed for the longest time that Ingrid was the painting subject's real name.
About Judith - my aunt gave Judith to me for Christmas and I've taken her with me everywhere ever since...she's been to New York and comes to college with me every year. Just looking at her kind, sympathetic eyes and smile is enough to soothe me right away. I always feel safe knowing that she, Ms. Important, and Susie are standing sentinel on my desk and countertop.
Anyway, anyone else have friends who are plastic (or ceramic, glass, whatever) and not necessarily plush?
