I said in a conversation once that I would thought it would be appropriate to have mandatory abortions for women that are currently serving in active duty, and people thought it was really offensive. I am wondering if this is really that bad of an idea? My reasoning was that early term abortions aren't that hard or expensive, and military service is a very serious obligation. I don't think anyone wants pregnant ladies running around on the battle field, and I don't think a man would be allowed to go home if he had some sort of medical problem that could be fixed as easily as an early abortion, so it doesn't make sense to allow it for women either. I've never served in the military or known anyone very well who had an abortion, so this is an uninformed opinion.

Why intrude on nature and prevent someone to develop an existence. Maybe it doesn't get another chance for an existence (the hypothetical baby). And in such a cold an d easy way. It doesn't make sense. It would develop into something awful

Erm, they're not supposed to engage in.....pregnancy inducing activities while on duty anyway.

I'd imagine if it happened they would get sent home. Nor would they send an already pregnant woman away on tour.

A pregnancy isn't a "medical problem" :?

Honestly? Forcing a woman to have an abortion when she doesn't want one is worse than rape in my book. Your idea is not going to be received well, and if I were you I would refrain from repeating it to anyone else.

I would imagine that the number of women affected is quite small and therefore the impact to the military would be pretty minimal..

Coercive abortion will tend to turn people off. People naturally have strong feelings about their reproductive processes being interfered with by outsiders. It's probably an extension of natural instincts.

Life is more important than military service, in this instance.

And, if you don't believe that a fetus is life, than the potential life is more important than military service.

Don't get me wrong - I think war is inevitable and necessary at times, but really, who would want to raise the death toll of war by abortions?

Think of the potential lives wasted because someone's temporary service was deemed more important than a kid.

Pregnancy is a problem in the military. A significant number of female soldiers were not deployable during the gulf war due to the fact that they were pregnant. However I object to forcing women to have abortions. A better idea would be restrict certain positions to women who are on birth control.

Pregnant women don't get sent into battle.

Not only would one person be in the line of danger, if the pregnant woman were to stay on duty that would be TWO lives in the line of danger. Best to send them home if such happens then let them decide what to do with the pregnancy. This is all assuming it's pregnancy while deployed in somewhere like Iraq is the problem here. I don't think women should be prevented from having children simply because they're enlisted.

Birth control is now actually stocked in the pharmacy supplies of most military units, so women are able to take precautions anyway. They could make birth control mandatory but the religious groups would object. But they wouldn't object to it as much as THIS topic :P (gosh, you'd have pro-lifers popping their arteries!)

I don't usually much care for the "if you aren't a woman, you should stay out of it" argument, but I think this is one of those cases. Although actually, when I think of it, even if this is a woman who sees abortion as killing, well, if you sign up for the military you're signing up to kill on command, no?

it depends on the job and location, if she should leave or not. there is a lot of office work in the military. also this has nothing to do with autism.

Agreed that this has nothing to do with autism and should be moved to a more appropriate location.

As for my two cents, I am hard core pro life and think it is only permissible when the mother's life is in imminent danger. Human life has a high value and should be protected at all costs. Sorry but I am tired of this culture of convenience and pleasure we live in where irresponsible sexual behavior bears no consequences.

I think that the idea of forcing women in the military to have an abortion against their wishes is deeply wrong. But careless behaviour which leads to a medical problem is a crime in the military.

Years ago I heard of two men who got into a lot of trouble, they were white men from north europe who choose to go sun bathing in the nude while deployed to africa. They fell asleep and go burnt in a rather senstive area (I have been told you are told to put a sock on it to keep it from being burnt). As they had to be medivaced for an avoidable injury they got into almighty trouble for their careless behaviour.

I do not know if a women in the US army who gets pregnant while on active duty gets into trouble, maybe she should be fined or put in the glasshouse if she disobeyed orders not to get pregnant but to kill the unborn child as a punishment is deeply wrong.
