In gimp there is an option to make animated gifs. It may require downloading a plugin.
Basically you clone an image and make changes to it repeat the process. Then you save the project as a gif .Gimp will automatically ask to make an animation. You can then set the time delay between frames and then it completed.

Note you can not do a transparent gif background as you see in IM winks forexample.
The file would need to know how to rewrite the frame buffer of your computer and their is noway an animated gif can do that (the way flash animation can).

Update ION has informed me that you simple tell the program to replace the layers instead of combining and it make them transparent!!

In theory you just need a serious of image files that are the same resolution and set the time delay between frames and the computer will do the rest.

Image He is a simple one I did.

i use paintshop pro, quite simple, just get images (as frames) and choose how many per second :)

some examplesi made using paintshop:

an animated banner i made for an old worms clan i was in

a little fun i had with a 'cannon' game :)

basically i made an image, saved it as '1.jpg' alterd it a bit to move it on to the next action, saved it as '2.jpg' etc then opened paintshop pro, and compiled the frames into a gif.

I'll have to get those two programs! Any links to 'em?

I reccomend the bannershop gif animator. It's always been my favourite. Simple to use, and you can make the gifs in it. I tend to do more detailed gifs, and it's good for that. Only lasts 30 days unless you buy it.

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Download and install GTK first (its listed on the above link)

Download and install the Gimp for your OS (I assume your using windowsXP).

Download and install the animation package to.

You might want to get the help files to.

Gimp has the advantage that is free , open source code and allways will be. Though
experts with Photoshop will have alot problems with it.
