As soon as my husband gets back to work I'm going to start on it, little by little and cheaply. I'm going to paint first, washing and spackeling the walls one week, then painting the ceiling the next, then the walls the next and then maybe putting up some crown moulding. I'm thinking of a pale muted pink. Very light. Then I'll do the floor, find a new (second hand) bed frame instead of the modern platform bed I have now, and then curtains, bed linens, etc, etc. I'll do one thing a week, even if it's just something small.

I'm going with English Country Cottage style. Any suggestions or ideas?

Curtains with flowers on them but natural flowers that aren't too bright like the ones you see in a garden. Pink, orange and yellow flowers would go best with the pink walls. Not too bright though.

as a painter I've work with alot of carpenders and let me warn you that crown moulding is very hard to do right even for seasoned trim carpenders, if you plan to do it yourself buy alot of caulk!

Sounds really nice so far. Is it one of those old houses with high ceilings? Crown moulding would be super in one of those.

What are you going to do with the old platform bed? What size is it? I'm tired of sleeping on the floor but all we have is a full-size futon mattress.

I misread that as "Relocate"

It's a fairly new house. It was build in 98 and we are the second owners. One of those Jim Walter homes that all look alike, so it's got regular ceilings. It has absolutely nothing special about it, which I hate because the house we moved here from in Forest Park was an extremely cool 2 story pre WWII.

I'm going to ask my son if he wants the bed frame because he's just got a box spring and mattress on the floor but if he doesn't you can have it if you want. It's a full size frame but could take a queen as well. It's the kind that has the shelf about a foot wide all the way around it under the box spring. It's convenient to put stuff on but you bang the hell our of your shins all the time. It will be a while before I get to that point though. Have you looked at Bham Freecycle online? I've got a lot of my furniture from my Freecycle here. I can keep an eye out for a bed for you if you want, but you'd have to go get it because I don't have a truck.

Love those old Forest Park houses, especially Craftsman style bungalows. Ours is a non-descript 1940s cottage woth 8' ceilings that make me slouch--and I'm not tall. But it has hardwood floors since I ripped out the carpet 20 years ago.
