Being a Star Trek fan, there are 2 questions no one has been able to answer for me. First off, In "Star Trek First Contact", How doe Cochrane & co manage to get back to earth since the ship doesn't appear capable of landing?

Second, In Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Odo has said that he doesn't eat & has no sense of smell. Since it takes energy to hold a shape, or do work, or simply sustain your metabolic processes How does he take in sustenance? He "regenerates" but that's not quite the same thing.

I went so far as contacting Andre Bourmanis (Star Trek's science consultant) but never got an answer. So.....any ideas?

I think the top part that they were sitting in detached & a parachute opened up.

Possibly direct absorption?

There is energy all around us. Even in space there is light, and no matter how cold it is, there is always heat (even in some parts of open space). So he could absorb heat energy: a room is typically around 294Kelvin (water boils somewhere between 350K and 390K).

Surrounding heat is unusable without a heatsink (i.e. somewhere colder) as per the 2nd law of thermodynamics.

Thinking about it now, Odo is never described as ridiculously cold, and physical contact with people would be out of the question unless he could control the extent to which he absorbed the energy.

Perhaps he has cells that can run off nuclear fission. In that case, only a very small amount of say, uranium 235 would be needed to satisfy his energy requirements for a very long time.

Perhaps Odo is a chemolithrotroph, did he not regenerate in a jar like container?
If so the container might have provided the inorganic substrates.

I imagine that would be how.

As for Odo, maybe he doesn't eat like humans do (i.e. food goes in mouth, gets digested in gut), he may eat like a microbe.

I was thinking something like that but I couldn't figure out how to explain it when I was typing up the other post so I gave up on worrying about it

I've done a lot of research on this, and I've uncovered some amazing new information on the subject after gaining access to Gene Rodenberry's journals from 1960 through 1990. It turns out Star Trek is just a collection of tv shows and movies of varying quality. Mystery solved. :)

edit: I love star trek and would have a hard time not slugging a guy who made fun of it like I just did.

So, was the starfleet academy in san francisco the only campus? Because shouldn't there be campuses on Vulcan, Tellar prime, and the moon Andoria too? I mean, they were founding members, how come a kid from one of those worlds would have to get sent to the other side of the galaxy to join starfleet? If they can't all get frisco style scientologist-looking starfleet academies, they should at least get some sattelite campuses.
