For those of you who do not know, Off-Grid means off of a system's grid. This can mean being independent of power utilities, or it could mean being under-the-radar: an "Invisible Man"

I mostly refer to the first one in this.

I want to do research/design yet live off-grid. Any ideas on how that would be possible? Closest I can see is being a College Professor or something similar.

(Ideal life has an Ecovillage + NASA-styled research + Artist's community that has a crop rotation where the people (parents and kids) who tend to the unharvested field take inventions/art/music on a tour of the outside world and trade for outside materials or help other people, but that is likely only possible by the time I'm dead, or not at all)

Well if you want to do research, you'll typically need someone to fund that research. If you want someone to fund your research, you'll need credentials that give them a reason to fund you to conduct it. For most research you're going to need a PhD in your respective field. As for "off-the-grid" research, what exactly do you have in mind? Most research nowadays will require, at the very least, a decent computer with internet, as well as appropriate facilities to conduct it in. Some may be able to be done at home, most will require special facilities of some kind (again, strongly depends on what kind of research)

So, could you be a professor or researcher yet live off the energy grid (do research at the university)
