What I am about to write here may seem strange, even crazy perhaps, but I have often met people, both inside and outside the workplace who, quite literally, could not see me. The behaviour that these people displayed showed every indication that they did not know that I was there right next to them (ex. one office co-worker who would never even look at me even though I worked near her desk for about three months, until one day I noticed that she was staring at me with a look on her face that one might see on someone who had just seen a ghost or an alien).
Then there was the time when another co-worker would consistently turn his back on me, as though he couldn't see or hear me. I thought at the time that he was just being extremely rude, but when I would wave my arms in front of his face he would just have a blank, zombie-like, expression on it. It was like he was residing in a nearby parallel universe (or some such).

Has anyone else had this - very serious - problem? Is it just me?

It's alright if they give off "You are invisible." vibes, but not really alright if they give off "You are invisible because I hate you." vibes.

If you feel like that people treat you like you're invisible, then maybe you could try talking to your co-workers. I don't mean you have to have a conversation with them, maybe a simple, "Good morning" or "Hi, how are you?" The reason they do not notice you now could be because you are quiet, so when they do see you (like that co-worker that works next to you) they give you funny looks. If you make them aware of your presences, you may not have this problem anymore.

I know the type. Clearly very rude people. At first it just mystified me, then it annoyed me, then I went through a period of doing whatever it took to make them look extremely stupid to continue pretending I wasn't there.

Now I just treat them the same way. Invisible. They aren't worth the energy.
