Saw this on FB and thought I'd share. In several states in the US people have had their identity stolen by people calling on the phone and posing as court clerks. They tell you that you didn't show up for jury duty and that you have a warrant out for you. When you tell them that you didn't get a notification in the mail they say they will look you up in their computer and pull the warrant. They ask for your full name, social security number and birthdate. Then they steal your identity.

So, if you get a call like this, one that sounds real, and they try to scare you into giving them the information, don't do it. Hang up or if you are worried it might be real, take their number and call them back or hang up and call your local cops.

There are also scammers calling all over, who claim to be tech support and want you to log into a website. They give you the web address and a log in number. That gives them remote access to your computer, of course they don't tell you that. Then if they can they also try to get your banking information. They usually say you have a virus or someone tried to access your bank, anything to scare you. It is all a lie. They are the thieves.

And of course the scammers from Nigeria. they don't only pull the bank frauds but also lonely hearts scams. Other countries also pull lonely hearts scams.

There are lot of videos on you tube about all of this. Some people recorded the phone calls.

It’d be interesting to visit that website and log in, using a computer with no personal data of yours (or with false data), and carefully monitoring what happens.

Some people have; that's how they know what the thieves do.

There is a group on you tube called Scam Busters and they used to have a site mocking the scammers. They would ask them to pose with a sign saying I am a scammer, or do other humiliating things in pix, which the scammers would be cause they thought money was at the end of it all. I say they used to have that website because I can't find it today. But it's in one of the videos about scammers.

There's a rather famous one called 419eater, though the last time I browsed it was a couple of years ago. You'd figure everyone knows about Nigerian scammers by now but I can see that's not the case after all

Yes I would think everyone would know to avoid Nigerian scammers too although maybe they don't say they are from Nigeria? The ones in the clips all had accents, but maybe the victims didn't make that connection? I also did not know scammers were phoning people now. I thought it was all by internet.

I saw a thing on TV about an elderly woman who was bilked out of every penny she had, even lost her house, due to slight age related dementia she couldn't say no (too afraid to) and kept sending scammers money when they phoned her. Really sad story. By the time her adult children knew about it, it was too late.

I've seen reports that go into detail on how some of it is done and the scammers will usually have someone local to the places they scam, who helps them launder the money.

I haaaate thieves.
