Why doesn't my mom like Hello Kitty? :(

I mean, if she was just kind of indifferent to Hello Kitty and didn't think much of her one way or the other, that would be okay, but my mom actually says things like, "She's just childish" or "she's too simplistic." She even talks about how childish it is that one of the students who lives in the scholarship house at the University she works at likes it.

Well, I actually LIKE Hello Kitty - and Pochacco, Keroppi, Cinnamoroll, Chococat, My Melody and all those cute little Sanrio characters. I just don't understand why liking cute things automatically makes you "childish." I've still kept all my younger sister's Hello Kitty plushies from when she was little (she was really into Hello Kitty as a kid and she gave her plushies to my youngest sister and me when she thought she was "too old" for it) because it's a nice reminder of my sister's childhood (that and so I can give them back to my sister if she ever does decide she wants them back after all). Her favorite Kitty plush was Hello Kitty dressed as a dancer, so that one's my favorite, too.

There's nothing WRONG with Hello Kitty....she's a cute, wholesome, relatable character. Isn't it pretty much human nature to be drawn to characters that are sweet, like-able and appealing? I just don't get why we're supposed to "grow out of" that. I'm so happy that Hello Kitty was the character my sister was drawn to as a kid rather than a rude, sarcastic and snobbish character.

Anyway, yeah...Sanrio characters for the win! I for one will never be "too old" for all things cute, wholesome and adorable.

Here in Poland, some time ago there was said by the Catholic Church that Hello Kity is satanistic and the same is for My Little Pony and Monster High, so they warned parents not to let their kids play with those

I read on some Polish mesage board that some teen said she loved Hello Kitty but her friends thought her to be childish due to this - the people from that forum claimed she shouldn't like it that much, for in Poland Hello Kitty is associated with something for kindergarten aged children.

Because different people like different things. You don't need your mother's approval to like something.

Why don't you ask her?

Oh Hello Kitty, my obsessive interest in fourth grade: pink backpack, lunchbox, those little twisty crayons, the works...To be fair, Hello Kitty is simplistic in terms of the way she's drawn. Even I can do a near perfect drawing of her, and my artistic skills are on par with a third grader's. That's besides the point though. Your mom just expects people your age to have more "sophisticated" tastes. That being said, there's no reason to quit liking something just because you've been alive for x number of years. Maturing should be more about experiencing new things and situations, not necessarily leaving old ones behind.

I liked Hello Kitty before it got over-commercialised and the franchise got too rampant and popular.

My mom though anime was childish and I was to old for cartoons too.

Then she happened to be in the room while I was watching the third (I think) InuYasha movie. During the back story where InuYasha's mom was murdered while in labor with him. She never called anime childish again. Still doesn't like them.

While your mother is entitled to her opinion, I hope she isn't belittling you for your enjoyment of Hello Kitty. I'm not much of a fan but I would never belittle my daughter if she was interested in it. It's better than Happy Tree Friends.

There is something about Hello Kitty that's weird, perhaps creepy weird or a display of attitude that turns me off and I usually love cute cuddly things that are aimed at stereotypical young to teen girls. Something about the design, facial expression and colors used. I don't know.

Maybe it's because she doesn't have a mouth, eyebrows, or anything on her face to indicate emotion? I've noticed that HK keeps the same facial expression in her merchandise-probably a result of her being very minimal in design, but I see what you mean.

Mum's can be strange. If she doesn't like Hello Kitty and she knows that's one of your special interests, she should try her best to keep it to herself. I like Hello Kitty. I like the simplistic characters in that series. As the old saying goes, "If you can't find anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Um maybe because everyone has their own different preferences and not everyone has to like what's popular or what society wants you to like maybe .... Just a wild guess

I think your right, actually a couple days ago at a fabric store I got a chance to examine HK for awhile and thinking about this thread and what I said that is about the answer I got.
