He's almost three years old now, and he constantly wants to play. I love him to death and I'd do just about anything for him. But I can't stand getting up out of my bed and playing with him for fifteen minutes. I'll do it for about three minutes, then I'll sit back down and do something else.

Is this a form of abuse? I love my cat - I just don't like standing for fifteen minutes and holding a string. I use to have a laser pointer, I just need to get another one. He obviously loves me too because he sleeps beside me constantly and nudges me and is generally a happy cat.

It's not a form of abuse. Free food and a base to come back to and live in freely is a much better alternative to being a stray I imagine. The Cat being played with is something 'extra'. They can fend for themselves if need be, killing mice and so forth. It's not going to die just because it has twelve minutes less than it might want of string playing time.

I have a cat as well, and something you can try that I have done is trying to find things he can play with by himself. For example, sometimes I will try to suspend a string in the air, or toss some balls or something on the ground, which can keep him entertained for hours!

Or you could leave a ball of wool around.

i believe your kitty will find 3 minutes of your undivided attention several times a day, will be sufficient. it would help if you gave him a good jowl scratching using a vigorous upwards scrolling motion of your fingers from his neck, through his lateral jowl line and up to his ears, he will love you forever if you do that for him. or her. or it.

There are tons of toys that does not require you to operate them. Tennis and ping pong balls, Mine also likes those plastic Easter eggs, doesn't hurt that I replace the candy with cat nip.

Abuse would be dressing him in a 3 piece suit

I read somewhere that if you put some ping pong balls and your cat in an empty bathtub they will amuse themselves for quite a while chasing the balls around.
No, I don't think it's abuse btw.

depends on the cat, my sister's old gray tabby plays with anybody that is gentle, for long periods, then jumps up and sleeps on any convenient lap.

I feel bad for the same reason. Cotton constantly wants attention, I'm never home because I work 14 hour shifts. She loves to claw my face when I'm sleeping.

I do what I can - I feed her, I keep the litter box clean but this animal is so full of life and energy. She should've been adopted into a home that had multiple children, and I should've picked a much more elderly cat. I love Cotton to death, don't get me wrong.
