You know; the ones where everyone just tells you to relax your eyes and it'll pop out at you...yet it never does!

I have tried for years and can't see those dang things! And I know how to relax my eyes (or focus past the plane of the paper... however you wanna say it)! I can see other similar types of optical illusions... but never these.

Bur!

I can; by holding the image real close to my face, letting my eyes go out of focus, then drawing the image back slowly from my face.

They come in real clear when I do it like that.

You mean the one where the alligator eyes follow you? Yeah I can not see the illusion myself.

I have my on and off days with them.

Ideally, for them to work best, your eyes should be focused on the page. It's the binocular vision that you have to "focus" beyond the page. That's functionally how they are designed to work. I've written programs to generate them.

One trick that has worked for me is to put a piece of card in between my eyes, viz:

Code:
                                               |
   \                                           |
eye )                                          |                         _
   /                                           |p                       / \
   nose --------card----------                 |a                      |   |
   \                                           |g                       \_/
eye )                                          |e                      focus
   /                                           |
                                               |

I think the card mainly serves to distract your binocular focus.
Next just actual look at (fully focused) on something about a foot past where you then "slide" the page in, trying hard not to refocus at all.
With luck, you can juggle all the above and eventually get a very blurred impression of the "magic" picture. It helps a lot if you know what it supposed to be!
The final bit is the hard bit. You now want to try to stay latched to the 3-D image, with the binocular focus, and let just your retinal(?) focus shift to the page.

Place your face close to the screen until you're seeing double, then slowly draw back; the image of a green acorn should pop into view (against a green backdrop).

Have a read through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostereogram. There's a bunch of other variants there. Try the pattern of cubes near the end. It helps quite a bit when you can see exactly what you are supposed to see, rather than the RDS effects, where the 3-D image is being purposefully obscured.

I see the world in 2D (completely flat) so I am unable to see those images.
